“Mack has but 35 more days to find 11 other preteens who...can together prevent the world-destroying Pale Queen from escaping 3,000 years of imprisonment... in this above-average, distinctly nonserious quest fantasy.” (ALA Booklist)
“Well-written and hilarious...The action moves at a breakneck pace but never seems rushed. The characters are consistently entertaining and engaging. Grant knows when to dial down the humor and let the gravity of the plot take center stage.” (School Library Journal)
About the Author
Michael Grant has spent much of his life on the move. Raised in a military family, he attended ten schools in five states, as well as three schools in France. Even as an adult he kept moving, and in fact he became a writer in part because it was one of the few jobs that wouldn’t tie him down. His fondest dream is to spend a year circumnavigating the globe and visiting every continent. Yes, even Antarctica. He lives in California with his wife, Katherine Applegate, and their two children. Mack MacAvoy is the leader of the Magnificent 12, a group of chosen twelve-year-olds with "enlightened puissance" who have been tasked with saving the world. The children aren't protecting us from the dangers we know, but the dangers that we don't remember. The Pale Queen, the mother of all monsters will escape her prison in a little over thirty days and Mack and his companions are our only hope of stopping her and her monster minions from taking over the world. In that time Mack must assemble the twelve, learn Vargran and figure out how to defeat her. So far he's found one of the twelve and brought along his middle school bully as a bodyguard. Will he be able to find the rest before the Pale Queen escapes?
First I'll mention this is the second book in a series and while it does summarize the previous book, it's always best to start with the first book in a series like this one. Unfortunately, this is my first encounter with this author's work so I didn't do that. Second I'll tell you off the bat this isn't a book that's written for adults. This is the book you buy for that eight or nine year old in your house that would rather have his teeth pulled than read a book. (I have two of those.) It's an excellent blend of humor and adventure that no child will be able to resist reading.
I have never in my life read a sillier book than this one. The element of adventure and fantasy is there of course, but it pales in comparison to the humor portrayed all throughout the book.Read more ›

Because this is the second book in the series, I downloaded the first, The Call, to my Kindle. I left my review of The Call on my GoodReads and its Amazon page. This review is about the paperback described above. This is my review:
Hurry, write the next one! This series is a lot of fun. AND educational. Ok, I will admit that I missed the built in dictionary of my Kindle for this is a real, life book. Where is the button to hit? But I had to look things up. I think most children who read this may do the same. There is just enough history and science to pique the curiosity without weighing the reader down with facts.
LOVE the golem and his wrap around journals and texts.
I plan to download this to my Kindle when it is available. I will read the series again.
Mack, the fearful (not fearless) leader of the Magnificent 12, has had a hard couple of days. Not only has he been informed that he has the special enlightened puissance that supposedly helps in seeing things that aren't really there, he is also one of the Magnificent 12 charged to defeat the Pale Queen. The Pale Queen is set to rule the world again in less than 35 days, and Mack needs to find the other 11 magnificent kids to help stop her. After a crazy plane ride to Australia, Mack found another girl, Jarrah. Only 10 more to go.
A LONG TIME AGO...
Paddy "Nine Iron" Trout, the feared Nafia assassin out for Mack's blood, came from humble beginnings. After plotting to kill his elder twin brother, Paddy was shipped off to America where he could have been an oat farmer, but decided to enter a life of crime instead. After quickly advancing in the ranks, Paddy reached the fateful day when a simple game of golf would change his life and earn him the nickname "Nine Iron." Without going into too much detail --- gold can be terribly boring --- let's just say that Paddy used his nine iron to hit something other than a ball and became the feared Nafia assassin. This reputation earned him an invitation with the mysterious Pale Queen.
STILL PRESENT DAY...
Mack, Jarrah, and Mack's bodyguard, seventh-grader Stefan, travel to China following a clue to the next Magnificent 12. They know they're in the right place when they are attacked by Lepercons, Tong Elves, Skirrits, and Paddy "Nine Iron" Trout himself. Things take a turn for the better, though, when they uncover an ancient dragon city hidden deep underground and meet the next member of the 12: Xiao Long.Read more ›
