About the Author
Ion is a strategic advisor to individuals and organizations, where he helps both employees and executives accelerate their development, reinvent themselves periodically and transform their errors into magnificent mistakes. He has a unique combination of entrepreneurial and executive experience in both the public and private sectors. Ion has worked as a Press Secretary on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, helped launch and run a ground-breaking international mobile media initiative at the world's largest mobile phone company in London, served as a senior executive in a fast-growing technology start-up in Montreal, and for the past 6 years has run a strategic advice firm with clients in North America and Europe. He also guides employees, executives and companies in reinventing themselves in response to changing personal, social, economic or technological circumstances. Drawing on his two decades of experience managing people, projects, brands and budgets, as well as 5 years researching leading-edge thinking on peak performance from around the world, Ion has created an innovative professional development philosophy and program that is distilled in his first book, "The Magnificent Mistake: How we earn more from Failure than we learn from Success". I remember viewing a TED talk where Dr. Brian Goldman criticizes the current medicine culture of shame that keeps doctors from pondering over their mistakes. Ion Valis puts light on this idea and goes further by stressing that not only should we embrace failure, but learning from our set backs improves performance. He gifts us with a clear checklist to make something of our mistakes in a practical and concrete way.
The book is extremely engaging and actually quite fun to read as it it filled with illustrations from all walks of life, including major businesses case studies, examples from the military, or even personal anecdotes. It is extremely well written, with thought provoking citations and take home messages being echoed throughout the book so that there is efficient consolidation of key principles.
I truly recommend it to anyone who is ready to become better at leading... and at living!
Drawing on the methodologies and best practices from numerous sources, as varied as Toyota Cars to Ernest Hemmingway, from the Israeli Air Force to Amazon, this book clearly distills the lessons to be learned from our mistakes. Mr. Valis provides a unique process, including the Master Checklist, and 12 key principles, to show you how to embrace your mistakes, how to analyze them both intelligently and thoroughly, and how to quickly draw the right lessons from your errors.
An excellent and worthwhile book.
