“I don’t want to be your rebound. I want to be your forever.”
JB McGee always delivers true romance, normally with a little angst and a lot of emotion and that is what she delivered with the Magnolia Grove series. Magnolia Grove is the story of childhood best friends that became very close to being sweethearts until life turned to shit and all they were left with was if’s but’s and maybe’s. Fast forward nine years and we pick back up with these two, one due to get married and the other hoping against all hopes he has one last chance to make her see the error of her ways.
“Do you really want to spend the rest of your life apologizing for your needs, for your existence? Begging to be seen? To be heard…Yearning to be touched and handled like the precious gem you are? Because I think – I know – you deserve better than he’s offering you.”
Camellia Spencer was a society girl who was trapped in the “women of Magnolia Grove” mentality. Where you married for status, a woman’s sole purpose was to keep her mouth shut and her husband happy and to turn a blind eye to their many indiscretions and maintain the stiff upper lip. Camellia loves her future husband…or at least she thinks she does…but he will never be the one that got away, the man that still holds her heart but is the one man that doesn’t want it…or does he?
“This isn’t even s***…It’s effing diarrhea it’s so messy.”
Holden Masters is the black sheep of Magnolia Grove, his reputation tarnished by his father’s indiscretions and tarred with that age-old adage that the apple doesn’t fall from the tree. Underneath the bad boy rep though was a man with a huge heart and one that when it loves, it loves fiercely. Holden has only ever loved one person and that is Camellia Spencer, his time is running out and he knows it, her impending marriage is the wakeup call he needed and it is now time for him to grow a set, believe in himself and fix one of his biggest regrets, but is it too little too late?
“All I did was act the part that everyone expected because I didn’t give a f*** what anyone else though about me other than you. And I’d already lost you.”
As ever, JB McGee hits you in the heart with these two and I was personally championing them along even if the whole of Magnolia Grove had other ideas. These two have a lot of hurdles to jump, speed bumps to navigate and curve balls to dodge but the love that these two had only took a little spark to launch back into a raging inferno.
“Note to self: Define us. Give her the world. And a effing dictionary.”
This was a cute romance, I loved both characters and especially loved them together. I loved the present and while I appreciated the past I just felt that there was too much of it and found myself struggling to remember where the present left off. Overall though, thoroughly enjoyed this read.
Magnolia Grove may be what some people strive for but this book shows money doesn't save you from everything. Holden and Cammie are absolutely perfect together but sometimes life just gets in the way.
If your looking for romance, drama, and comedy look no further. I found the characters likeable and relateable. This book definitely has some ups and downs which I've come to expect from this author, I will definitely be reading more.
I love the chemistry, I love the fight. I love that they know what they want and although there are forces trying to keep them apart, they keep going.
Such a pleasurable read!
So I had no idea that these had been previously been released as a series of novellas and more fool me because I obviously missed a cracking read first time round, so picking this little collection up this time I have to say that it was delightful.
Camellia Spencer wasn’t the girl that her family wanted her to be and nor should she have been. They had their expectations of not only who and when she would marry and what sort of wife and come to think of it what woman she would be too but she had other ideas, ones that would have them and the country club running for the hills.
So when she is selected for the dream date auction at the Country Club, who was she to refuse. Little did she know that a blast from her past was about to blow in and whip up a storm at a club that never believed he was good enough and for a woman that he should never have let slip through his fingers.
He had Cammie once in his life and despite their dreams, it was their reality that won through but that hasn’t stopped the fact that Holden Maters has loved her every day from that day to this and now that he has the opportunity to win her back he isn’t going to let anything get in his way. From the outset I clicked with Holden, he rang true for me and that was enough to have me rooting for him all the way.
He had been through the mill yes but he was a stronger person for all his tragedy and I loved the fact that he was so driven. From his teenage years Camellia had meant something to him and now he had her he was going to do everything he had to in order to keep her…losing was not an option.
The connection between the two of them was so intense that you may very well need and fan or a damp flannel because cooling yourself down is unavoidable! They set the pages ablaze!
I liked the fact that the story was told both in the here and now and retrospectively and that, the time that the author gave us glancing backwards was equally as important as it showed who they were then and why what they had was right for that time. And in doing so it highlighted just how right they were for each other now!
Great story, well written and highly entertaining – loved it.
