The much anticipated follow-up to Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, Magnolia features a specially orchestrated soundtrack, largely written and performed by Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday member and sadly overlooked solo artist). Mann's voice has always been a suitable vehicle for conveying emotional turmoil and indelible sadness, and several tracks here ("Build That Wall," "You Do," "Driving Sideways") do so with the rich melodicism that informs her best work. Producer Jon Brion's sprightly horn arrangements for "Momentum" are an unexpected (though not completely unwelcome) splash of cold water. Only Mann's cover of the Harry Nilsson-penned Three Dog Night hit "One" backfires, as it simply doesn't deliver the same effective climax as the original. The two Supertramp tracks from their Breakfast in America LP tacked on at album's end are incongruous (though they cut down the degrees of separation between them and Mann to an incredible one!). However, for anyone with an interest in Mann's melodic songwriting, there are eight worthy originals waiting for you. --Rob O'Connor

Somewhere at Interscope there is an executive who is feeling a little bit nervous right now as the public encounters the wonderful new music by Aimee Mann that her former label rejected. Okay, this album and the upcoming Bachelor #2 may tank, but then maybe the film and the promotion surrounding the film will expose CD buyers at long last to the brilliant talent of Aimee Mann. This record dispenses with the kitchen sink approach of her "I'm With Stupid" album for a more carefully arranged and slicker approach. It works well -- with a voice like Aimee's you need to construct the supporting instrumentation with great delicacy. A couple of the songs almost sound like Carpenters' arrangements - and I mean that as a huge compliment. Aimee's songs are better than ever -- especially "Deathly" and "You Do," but it's hard to pick favorites. Supertramp is represented on this soundtrack with two excellent oldies that comment nicely on the mood Aimee establishes here. It is a great album.

The melodic phrases of this album are wonderfully flavored. They are simple and easy to digest. That's not to say Aimee lacks skill. It's quite the opposite. She's remarkable talented and uses a considerable array of tambors. I was surprised to see several Supertramp songs on the album. But it's obviously a nod to another great band from Aimee.

I saw a screening of Magnolia about a month before it came out and ever since it has been a perpetual soundtrack in my head. Aimee Mann's songwriting, lyrics and voice are overwhelming. I had to go see Magnolia a second time just to make sure that it really was a great movie, beyond the soundtrack (it is, even if it is in serious need of editing).
'Save Me' is the single and it is great, but 'Wise Up' is the haunting anthem for post gen x'ers trying to enter that dreaded thing we call adulthood. As it says in the book, "we might be through with the past, but the past isn't through with us"

A collection of songs that capture the same varied emotions of the film, most of which are sung by the captivating Aimme Mann, this is a must have if you loved the movie.
