Three minor complains are:
It gets a bit warm wearing them after an hour or so. My previous work boots always kept my feet fair cool. I need to be standing in the sun for a fair while before my old boots would heat my feet up. These ones would get warm after standing in them for a few minutes. The saving grace is they do not get much warmer after that. Nevertheless, I worry that should I start to walk or move around in them a lot, it might become too warm and sweaty in there.
Secondly, I find that the side zip only allows me to remove the boots. If I leave the laces done up as I remove the boots, i could not put them back on without untying the laces. What is the point of the side zip then? I want quick on as well as quick off. Perhaps they made the zip length too shallow? The way I solve this issue is to buy an add-on front boot-zip to attach the laces to, but then I now have two sets of zips, one side and one front, and also the boots feel less secure. I will get used to this but it is hardly ideal nor as designed.
Lastly, I found that how ever I laced the boots, the laces were always a bit on the short side. Why would a pair of premium boots come with not-long-enough laces is a mystery. I could finally get the length to work out by skipping eyelets up along each boot, three sets each to be precise. (To me, if I have to re-lace eyelets after putting a boot on, the laces are too short. I don't want to have to pull the lace out of eyelets just so that my foot can fit through the opening.Read more ›
4 stars because the zipper failed on the left boot within 3 months and the leather on the toe will tear quite easily.
I WOULD ABSOLUTELY BUY THESE AGAIN. I wore these boots for work sometimes 16-17 hours straight and no complaints.
Most boots I've worn, ESPECIALLY in the Army, offered minimal arch support. I'm used to it, so I wear insoles. I've got VERY flat feet.
These boots lasted me 16 months, before the side of the boot started to separate from the sole along a 2 inch section. They STILL fit, and work. They just aren't waterproof any more. They could probably be repaired, rather than replaced. It would certainly save me the trouble of breaking a new pair in.
Even after broken in, the top of the boot is rather tight, when putting the boot on, so I have to pull hard. Even after 16 months. I seem to recall it only took me a few days to break them in, and they were fully broken in within the first month.
I've been wearing them almost every single day since I bought them 16 months ago, for over 12 hours per day. They are as comfortable as a pair of sneakers, and I use them AS my sneakers, more often than not. Mud, rain, grease, wildland fires, water, snow... I've only polished them once.
They breathe okay in the summer, and aren't TOO terribly cold in the winter. I live in Michigan, and this is an okay year round boot. Not an ideal snow boot, but they work.
In the past, I was lucky to get 6 months to a year out of a pair of boots. Especially Bates. These are lighter, and a lot tougher than any of the other boots I've bought, or was issued.
Just ordered my second pair today.
I shifted to these from Bates due to a lowering of Bates quality, and the comparison is not good.
These are harder to put on, even after breakin, a lot harder.
They are heavier, and hotter.
And last of all they are not lasting any better.
I know for a fact he only wears a size 10 in normal shoes, so I was not surprised when they were much too large for his feet.
I decided to order a 9.5 instead, which ended up being a perfect fit. He wears them everywhere now!
The exchange process for the seller was a bit odd (I sent them back & got a full refund, rather than them just exchanging the size) but the second pair came just as quickly as the first and the sizing issue was resolved in about a week.
