First, she must discover who she really is. Second, she must find her hidden strengths and abilities. Third, she must develop these skills to prove herself worthy to venture into the unfamiliar world (i.e., of the "real world" of adulthood). Fourth, she must find her true friends. Fifth, she must find her place in this new world. Sixth, she must face adversity to prove she can take care of herself. Seventh, and finally, she must prove that she come to the aid of her parents when they need it.
I may be making too much of the story, but I think there's more to The Magpie's Daughter than meets the eye. ;)
When teen angst meets faerie intrigue, a smart mouth & stubbornness can really cause problems.
So, how will Aeryn survive the unfamiliar faerie court, and what new problem are her choices going to cause?
You need to read this one.
Skye’s plot line is ever-evolving and her characters are compelling as she takes her readers from the everyday, mundane life of a typical friendless teenager coping with bullies, separated parents, and the challenges of growing up in this world to an enchanted land where her lead character suddenly finds herself searching for her missing father, finds out she is half Fae, has somewhat of a reputation—due to her paternal history, and is able to conjure magic. The heroine of this tale, Aeryn, may be a bit testy and oh-so stubborn, but she truly reflects the attributes of most young girls her age who—in real-life—have to deal with regular high school life.
Skye provides rich with comparisons between the human and Fae worlds; there are humorous antics off-set by dire moments of strife as we meet beautiful people who may sometimes be the most wicked of all; and—alongside our inexperienced Fae protagonist—we learn there is a tenous balance between maintaining a friendship and taking advantage of others to get what one wants.
Action... Adventure... Mystery... Suspense... Horror... Romance... Thrills and Chills... It’s hard to believe that one writer could pack so much “WOW!” between the pages of just one novel. “The Magpie’s Daughter” stands as one of my all-time favorite Fantasy novels.
