This text was written by the 9th Karmapa Wangchug Dorje who lived in the 16th century. Please ignore the ad hominum remarks in reviews both for and against this book, and don't let them influence your decision to purchase this book. This is a fine and readable translation of an important mahamudra text that is otherwise very difficult to obtain. While I am not fluent in Tibetan, I have studied in the Kagyu lineage for almost 30 years and received many teachings on mahamudra over the years, including teachings on this text. Furthermore, I have compared this text to Elizabeth Callahan's translation, which is also excellent, though more "technical". This text is readable, reliable, and inspiring. Although I cannot speak for the lineage teachers, many say that one needs to have received the pointing out transmissions to purchase or read this book; however, the truth is that this information is out there and available in other forms, such as Thrangu Rinpoche's teachings on this and related texts. The main "danger" is that many people will irresistibly mistake conceptual understanding for direct experience, creating a barrier to further progress. On the other hand, these teachings might be the pointing out that liberate you.

***WARNING*** If you are content in conditioned existence, relying on external matter to fuel your internal chatter, going through life adopting and rejecting, buying into a true existence of "this" and "that", this book is not for you.

This is good translation of a profound text by the 9th Gyalwa Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje. There is no commentary. Strictly a translation. So if you are one who thinks you will get kooties because this is from the "other" camp, go back to your cushion and examine the nature of kooties and "other".

Great manual for a student who has been on the path for some time and received many instructions, specifically in Mahāmudrā context. For a beginner it would be advisable to consult with your teacher before undertaking.

View, Meditation, and Action

Tilopa:
The royal view is to be beyond grasper and grasped. The royal meditation is to be undistracted. The royal action is to be without effort. The royal fruit is to be without hope and fear.

This is a wonderful translation of this text.
I actually emailed to the translator to ensure that he had authorization to even publish this text in English.
He answered in the affirmative.

Since I have Dzogchen direct transmission, I also mentioned this to him as well.
I have had no issue with this text however the "warning" regarding conceptuality versus actuality is valid.

A book is a book..........Being in the state of Mahamudra/Dzogchen is a different matter. Don't confuse the 2! :)

Blessings to you all who buy, read and practice what this text says to practice.

A weak and dubious translation

A distressing contrast between one of the most remarkable Mahamudra classic Buddhist text and
a weak and questionable translation. It is moreover correct that the translator is far from being reliable regarding Mahamudra practice.
Instead, a sublime translation of the root text exist: Mahamudra: The Ocean of Definitive Meaning (Ngedon Gyamtso), a translation made by Elizabeth Callahan - Nitartha publications.

This book was translated by one of the Sharmpa's students and Lama Oily. Do not purchase unless you want kooties.
