Maharam Agenda Flexibound – Organizer, June 1, 2010

3.8 3.8 out of 5 stars 6 ratings

First renowned as a supplier of theatrical textiles to Broadway and beyond, Maharam pioneered the concept of engineered textiles for interior applications in the sixties, and is the world's leading provider of textiles to commercial architects and interior designers. Maharam takes a holistic view of design, embracing a range of disciplines including architecture and interiors, furniture, fashion, accessories, graphic and digital media. The Maharam Design Studio oversees the cultivation of an extensive textile collection, ranging from re-editions of enduring designs by the twentieth century's most noted visionaries to textile-based collaborations with industry outsiders including Konstantin Grcic, Hella Jongerius, Maira Kalman, Bruce Mau, Jasper Morrison, Nike and Paul Smith, among others. The publication provides a comprehensive overview of the company's history, cultural markers and design projects. Abstracted product applications are featured through "Useless Objects," a collaboration with Jasper Morrison.

This is a beautiful book, not only in its content, but in its production! Designed and written by the owners of the company, a textile/fabric manufacturer, it is a delight to review/revisit, even if you are not interested in fabrics. Information on design consultants/sources makes it a valuable design reference. Highly recommended, if for no other than a visual delight! One of the best "histories" of a company that I have ever seen!

Maharam customer service is just about the worst I've ever encountered. In short, I found them to be rude, dismissive, and as the process of locating my lost items dragged on, they became entirely non-responsive. They accept no responsibility for their products once they've shipped or for the shipping process itself. If you must buy their products, I'd urge you to do it through your designer or another design professional.

Michael and Stephan Maharam are fourth generation owners of a textile design company that stands head and shoulders above the rest. The photography and layout of this book is coffee table-worthy, richly illustrating the unique design instincts that have made Maharam more than just financially successful but admired world-wide by customers, suppliers and even competitors for their strict adherence to quality and creative innovation. The book is a tribute to them and their ancestors who started the company. (and how do they embroider a hardcover book, anyway?) Very cool.
