About a week has passed since Maia’s team, Core 21, had a successfully ran at the Alliance Initiative on Xif. Everything has changed and when the dust settles, Maia know nothing will ever be the same again – and she needs to keep pushing to make sure it doesn’t. Still reeling from the revelations from her mother, Maia and her team descend into the next level of the Initiative, deep under the seas in the underwater City of Zagran.
This is a solid YA Science Fiction, one that plays both a Coming of Age narrative and an adventure the likes of which will have you jumping out of your seat – or at least shouting “Yes!”
I enjoyed Book 1 and have thoroughly enjoyed Book 2. Maia is growing, as is her Team. I can’t wait to see what is next – and if the book Maia is deciphering is any clue, Book 3 will be one heck of a ride!
Despite so much odd and resistance, she fought back single mindedly against all evil forces and conspirators.
The first episode ended with a big question whether the brave girl could lead her team to unveil the truth of / or had to wait for the next move from conspirators.
No doubt, the story is likely to instil self- confidence, determination and high morale in the mind of young readers.
The story is very much absorbing with the gradual unfolding of events one after another.
In the second episode, the deep rooted conspiracies and deceptions have stared unfolding. The events have started slowly pushing the heterogeneous characters with different motives towards centre stages. Still, we find that the readers though eager, have to wait further for the culmination of final events.
In this book we travel with Maia and her fellow teammates to the fascinating underwater city of Zagran for the next stage in the Initiative. However, all is not as it seems as a revelation left for Maia from her late mother Sophie has set the stakes much higher and the lives of everyone on the plant of Tansi could be affected. While the Core 21 team work their way through the many technical challenges the Initiative sets for them under the ocean, they find the tension escalating as they learn more about what brought their planet to its current state, as well as the ultimate destruction that may be in store for them.
This book was a great ride with a well written narrative deftly weaving many hints, connections and reveals throughout. I cannot say enough about the meticulous world building that Ms. Basu has done for these books. It’s very exciting to link bits together and discover new facets to the story. I really enjoy the way the characters of Maia and her Core 21 teammates are evolving both on their own and through their relations with each other. The science is spot on as well with all the intricacies of the Jjord power systems and energy farms. So much interesting detail there. SZ also has a great sense of escalating action, danger and intrigue that definitely adds to the tension and kept this reader engrossed.
I wrapped myself up in the building complexity of this story and didn’t want it to end. After the new twist of clues and information offered during the ending pages of this book, I will find it hard to wait for the next installment. Overall a very fun and captivating read. Really a unique series too in that it blends elements of hard sci-fi in an accessible YA format. Definitely pick up Book 1- Maia and the Xifarian Conspiracy to read first if you haven’t done so already. Highly recommended!
