Some reviews have said the love story was based only on physical attraction, and while there was certainly attraction in that sense, too much time was spent noting the character of our hero to think her only interest in him was solely physical. They were both characters you could connect with and love.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable love story with much interaction and dialog between our hero and heroine (which I personally enjoy very much). I am sure I will read it again... and probably again ;)
Part of my fascination with this book is that I have been to The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC and toured the mansion and property. Also, there are floor plans of the Biltmore on line, as well as maps of the grounds, and I loved following along with the story. When the staff was working in the laundry or the drying room or the library or smoking room... I was there. I can get pretty nerdy about story settings, and often pull out a map so I know exactly where I am. This one was really fun for me!!
Deeanne Gist does such a wonderful job with her characters and settings, I feel like I'm there and living the story of Mack and Tillie. She gives vivid, detailed descriptions of the estate as well as the duties of each employee. The daily lives of Tillie and Mack are outlined and described as if you were a fly on the wall. The sweet growth of their feelings and how things come together is a great story.
The descriptions, though superb, are overshadowed by the feelings and motives of the characters. You feel what they feel. No reader can ask for more. I would highly recommend this book!
I absolutely recommend this book if you enjoy historical fiction and romance with godly influence.
