Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* It’s been eight years since California private investigator Gil Yates’ last novel, eight long years. Of course, fans know that Gil isn’t really a licensed PI; his name really isn’t Gil Yates; and his amateur sleuthing is done on the sly, hidden from his overbearing wife and his gasbag father-in-law. Fans also know he’s an eccentric narrator with a self-admitted inability to handle clichés—A nickel for your thoughts? he asks at one point, getting it almost right. He’s also in the habit of charging outrageous per-diem rates, like the 10,000 bucks a day he’s getting from a highly unlikable heart surgeon to find out whether the surgeon’s son-in-law’s plunge from the roof of a department store was suicide (as the police contend) or murder (as the widow, the surgeon’s head-turningly gorgeous daughter, says). The author takes a fairly traditional hard-boiled setup—the questionable death, the beautiful young widow, the arrogant client, the client’s seductive wife, the wiseass narrator—but, hilariously, turns it into a near farce. There’s a real mystery to be solved here, but the greater pleasure for readers is listening to Gil’s quirky voice and meeting Boyle’s cast of weird and wonderful characters. This book was a long time coming, but, oh boy, was it worth the wait! --David Pitt
