Ida Mae Miller, the sister of Elizabeth, was engaged to Stefan but he has changed, became cruel and physically abusive. Ida knows that she must get away and under cover of night she will escape to her sister’s home and hide. Ida will read some of the potential groom's letters and discuss them with Elizabeth, and then one day, Harriett Farmer will write Elizabeth about her son, Simon, and the same day a letter will come from Simon with the request for a bride. Is this the answer that Ida has been waiting for, a chance at a new beginning?
“He would honor his mother and stop dwelling on the past. He had to begin moving forward. At the very least, he would enjoy the companionship of someone else.” –Simon
“I believe you need to leave Beckham to find freedom. I’d never place you in a situation where you’d be in danger. I know it feels hopeless, but you’re not alone. God often places his hand on these matches and guides our steps.” –Elizabeth
Ida is moving by Simon’s letter and with her faith in her sister, and Harriett, the two sisters, will take a train to Seattle. There is a chemistry between Simon and Ida that both recognize. Both are dealing with demons from the past and will have to be honest and open with each other. Two people who are vertical strangers will make a life-long commitment to each other. One is dealing with a ghost, the other a living nightmare. Can they find happiness in their future? Has Ida escaped her past and will she and Simon be able to make a happy marriage? Will Stefan give up on her and leave her alone?
“I’m learning to live one day at a time because the future can change in the blink of an eye.” –Ida
“The world is unique all around us. One thing I’ve been told is that if our lives are not going in the right direction, we only need to change the environment around us to find a new path to follow.” –Simon
“Regardless of what’s in your past, true love always wins. In matters of the heart, nothing is stronger.”
The story is a clean romance with some Christian elements, without being preachy. There is a great cast of characters, plenty of angst, intense moments, heartfelt honesty, and human emotions. The story also brings out that there are the good, the bad, and the ugly in people, but if we focus on the positive, keep the Lord in our life, and strive for the best, that we can make a good life. The story also has bits of historical elements and great visuals of the area of Seattle.
To read the experiences of Ida - from her impressions of seeing the natural beauty surrounding Seattle to the challenges of her life in Beckham to those of a mail-order bride - was engaging right from the beginning. I don't think one has to have been to the places to enjoy the read. Cissie Patterson has done a fine job of capturing the feelings and reactions one has upon first glimpsing the Pacific Northwest, and weaves a good story with an unexpected manner of resolution. I am looking forward to reading more by this newly published author!
i love the history of Seattle, liked revisiting Harriett and her family im going back and read her story again.
i like Ms Petterson's writing and will read her books again
the two main characters were great and there was a little mystery with her ex fiance.
