This is not your average book. The story is really a frame for the individual remembrances from the Registry of Souls. This is an essential element for the trilogy as it fleshes out Majipoor's history . The book is not only advancing the character Hissune, but provides essential elements necessary to understanding how Majipoor got to be the place it is.

I enjoyed the story within story structure and the insight into the relationship between the Lord of Majipoor and the Emperor of Majipoor. All those seemingly soulless drones plodding through the administrative details of an entire planet, aptly buried in the pit to avoid the distractions of the outer world was very telling. Imagine, people who live in darkness, buried for their entire lives and being totally fine with it. How do you get that way???

The book give a little enlightenment on that score.

The second book is necessary to move the tale of Majipoor and the characters along on this tale. It especially brings Hissun into sharp focus and what Lord Valentine saw in the ten year old he met in the Labyrinth. More on the political intrigues that propel the tale to a climax, alien and homan plans and schemes abound.

Written by Robert silverberg as a bridge between Lord Valentine's Castle and Valentine Pontifex. I found it to be necessary to bridge the connection between the two novels. As well as very interesting short stories exploring the history a Majipoor. Nice to have a full series that is finished.

Extraordinary work of escapist fiction. Ranks with Tolkien, Heinlein, and every other great fiction novel. Truly a must read for anyone who loves to be transported.

Much the same way people (including myself) wish they could move to Middle Earth, I would gladly put in for a visa application to Majipoor. It is a journey across a vast planet where each continent, each city, species, faction is especially different. And rather than vast battles or epic fights of magic or technology, the action is diplomatic, political, personal.

Dipping in and out of other people's memories is a little voyeuristic. Cool, but a little creepy. This book is good, but I enjoyed Valentine's travels more.

I decided to read this book on a whim--I remembered Mr. Silverberg from about 40-years ago, and wanted to revisit. I was not disappointed! The characters were so rich, and the action moved forward unceasingly. I also liked the way the author wove together many stories. Thank you, Mr. Silverberg!

It starts as an enjoyable read. Interesting characters and world building, a little action, some neat premises. It's very much a pacifist philosophy book, and there's a good bit of "this is kind of a nice thoughtful relaxing change of pace." There are some progressive thoughts which are nice in the theoretical.

The tension was missing however. people just didn't act like people, and it was all explained away as "that's just how it works in this universe." The hero has an idea, and the universe shifts to accommodate that idea.

It ends with a whole lot to be resolved. I only started book two, which I put down when it seemed it would be told through a series of short stories involving new characters. Meh.

Robert Silverberg has always been one of the best SciFi authors ever. Hands down amazing world building, great characters, captivating stories. Definitely in one league with Peter F. Hamilton and N.K. Jemisin

4.0 out of 5 stars Going through memories of inhabitants of a fictional world. What else is there to say?

I remember reading this book when I was only fourteen (the same age of the main character). Reading it now as an adult made me only want to read more of the author. Even though it can get dull at some points, the reading is totally worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the book, 1 star for the Kindle.

Silverberg has been one of my favourite authors for many years. The Majipoor series are unusual; most of his works are standalone novels, and tend to be darker and more complex, but the enormous world of Majipoor seemed to interest Silverberg enough to write many tales about its inhabitants, both human and alien.
This is the sequel to the majestic Lord Valentine's Castle, which was a long, meandering but fascinating story of a young man regaining his destiny. Majipoor Chronicles is a series of short stories giving us a glimpse of the long history of the planet, including a snapshot of how humans conquered the indigenous species, the Piurivar, who are shapeshifters.
I give 5 stars to the stories, but the usual 1 star to the Gollancz Gateway Kindle edition, which as usual has numerous OCR errors; missing words and full stops, separated words (e.g. any where, up heaved, over whelming, and hilariously, Shape shitfers for Shapeshifters). Please, Gollancz, every single Gateway Kindle book I buy is riddled with them, where much cheaper Kindles (such as the excellent Wildside Press Megapacks) are very well proofread! My proofreading services are available (I'm not professional, would do it for free!)

4.0 out of 5 stars More from the giant planet

I read these books years ago, and, with many other favourites, I am putting scruffy paperbacks to one side and transferring them to Kindle. Silverberg is, in my opinion, towards the top of the second class of sf writers (there are five classes . . ) The re-read didn't disappoint, and if you haven't tried them before, do give them a go. Start with Lord Valentine's Castle though - this one will only confuse you!
