All career searches must start with these questions: What kind of person am I and what do I seek?

I met this book in the fall of 1980, twenty years after the book came out. I was an English major whose foray into 8 years of financial and loan management became frustrating. I did not contain the same core as my fellow bankers and was not comfortable in their conversations; I had entered the field out of curiosity and enjoyed the learning, but I overstayed my visit. This book, introduced to my by a Haldane career counselor, helped me find my center. I began my search by listing ten successes in my 35 year life; those included making characters from War of the Worlds out of clay. The idea is to identify core likes and joys and pride. I walked through a process of identifying what an ideal job would look like (able to have coffee on my desk was a key). I identified goals and directions, I researched possible job areas, and I followed up each interview with a thank you letter. In a way, this book is a good companion to How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie: how can you become an employee you would be proud to hire and work with. I followed the advice and direction of the book and ended up working in the two top areas that came up in my searches: advertising (8 years) and teaching (18 plus years and continuing). I used the book to counsel my students and continue to recommend it to my students.

Bernard Haldane started the movement towards success, positive psychology and focusing on your success. He was really popular and has a great way of inspiring you in his book. I liked that he walked me thru the mindset of success and then a way to chart that for ourselves. A great and timeless book.

I used this book many, many years ago when I knew I had to change my career, because I was definitely in the wrong one: talent does not determine a career - that was something that I had to learn the hard way. This book truly helped me see what made me happy, it uncovered my hidden passions, and uncovered what made me feel successful (not the same as rich!). I'm going to help my 9th grade daughter figure-out her "successes", to help her figure-out her college path to her "successful" career.
