I label this as 3.5 stars because there was something about Alassandra and Penn's story that I didn't like, and maybe didn't quite believe. I guess I don't know why she would harden her heart after the death of her fiance. I don't understand what would make her do that when she was so passionate about everything else. I don't understand why the townspeople would expect her to carry that grief with her always, when she is young and has her whole life ahead of her. I also didn't like her denial about certain situations and relationships, even though I know people can be that way in life.
Penn & Alassandra's story seemed to drag a bit because the more compelling story, to me, was Claire and Gil's. I couldn't wait to get back to their story as I was turning the pages. Friends since elementary school, Claire and Gil know each other inside and out, but it takes a road trip together to make Gil realize he feels something more for Claire. Claire's impending marriage to another man is tearing Gil apart, but at the same time he wants her to be happy. Claire doesn't know why she doesn't feel right about her upcoming nupitals, but will she realize the reason why before it's too late?
Let's just say the darkest hour was great, as almost all the previous chapters really played up each other's fears, and the darkest hour played upon BOTH of their deepest fears and drove them apart. However, the grand gesture, while grand, was a bit... of a spectacle. And let's just say it involved a dunking booth. As for how, you'll have to read it for yourself.
