Whether it's related to work, a hobby, sports, or a homemaking skill (such as baking, or repairing a screen door), every adult knows more than he or she realizes.
"Make Learning Come Alive!" is a simple, step-by-step guide to use that knowledge to create original unit studies for your children, your classroom, your Sunday School class, or your Scout group.
Though this book may seem a little light in specific how-to directions, by the end of this book, you'll have enough ideas and confidence to begin a unit study plan. In addition to suggesting a wide range of activities and resources, this book can give you the confidence to get started. That may be this book's most important lesson.
The uses for a book like this are almost limitless, if you're in a teaching or learning environment.
The simplicity of Ms. Mooney's approach makes me wish this book had been available when I was homeschooling my three children. It would have saved me time and money, and significantly reduced the stress related to finding things to teach my children, and new & interesting ways to present them.
However, this book isn't just for homeschoolers.
For example, if you have a weekly "family night" to bond with your children, you'll use this book regularly. Following Ms. Mooney's suggestions, you'll discover fresh ways to share your family traditions, skills and your personal & family history, a little each week.
Also, Scout leaders will use these ideas to supplement the list of requirements for badges and awards. Instead of it being a by-the-numbers meeting to complete a requirement, den and troop members will arrive eager to start each meeting and stay in focus on that day's activity.
Reproducible forms at the back of this book make it easy to involve children in the process of creating unit studies. When you already know what they want to learn and how they'd like to learn it, planning the unit is almost effortless.
I am aware that there's been a lot of research demonstrating the greater effectiveness of "superlearning" which includes more whole brain, multisensory ways for students to learn.
I didn't realize that homeschoolers can take advantage of this to help their students learn -- and retain -- more.
This book is a terrific guide for homeschooling parents. It explains various ways they can use to teach the material. It also helps them both retain -- and use -- the knowledge by linking it to other subjects.
So use this book to help you produce or add to your current home schooling curriculum. And can give any teacher with the freedom to teach outside the textbook useful ideas to add to their courses.
