"Make Me a Match" by Mackenzie Lucas is part of the ‘Soul Mate Tree’ series and spotlights widower Mark Cage whose college-bound daughter is concerned about leaving alone when she leaves to pursue her degree. His interest in a sweet-looking lady is atypical as well as frowned upon by both his best friend and the new relationship coach on the island, Athena Sullivan, but Mark is determined to court the woman who’s caught his attention. Intervention by two surprising entities make him reconsider the reason why Athena irritates him so much, but he may be too stubborn to realize it is possible to love again.
This adult contemporary romance has a couple of lovely fantasy elements that help tie it into the series and has a delightfully contradictory hero with a poignant backstory. I enjoyed the irony of his infatuation with a woman who is looking for her own soul mate while ignoring his attraction to an entirely different person. I would have liked to have developed a stronger connection to the characters as I didn’t think I really got to know any of them very well but I enjoyed the sparks that ignite between the hero and heroine. A fair bit of the story is pretty predictable but the tale is a nice quick romantic read.

This book is about widower Mark Cage and his not so lucky life in the romance department. However, all that is about to change when Mark’s teenage daughter, who is about to leave for college is worried about leaving her dad all alone. So, in an attempt to find him a love interest, she purchases a matchmaking package with sexy relationship guru, Athena Sullivan. Little does she know that Athena is the last person her dad would ask for help – especially in matters of his love life.
Although Mark is not thrilled about having to work with Athena, he knows his daughter’s heart was in the right place. Athena teaches Mark the dating basics for him to use on his crush, a sweet, kindergarten teacher. However, after spending so much time with Athena he realizes he misjudged her. Furthermore, Mark realizes the attraction and chemistry he has for Athena. Will Athena also share these same feelings? Are these two soulmates and destined for true love? Sorry – no spoilers here! But you’ll definitely want to find out how this one ends!
This book was a super quick, easy, fun read at only 133 pages! I was able to finish this book in just two sittings! It would have one if I actually didn’t have to sleep lol.
I liked the main characters, Mark and Athena. They were likable, relatable, and genuine. Mark is strong-willed, determined, grumpy, and at times naturally humorous. Athena is tough, confident, fearless, sassy, and at times a bit cheeky. I really enjoyed the scenes where Mark was stewing over having to work with Athena and vice versa. Also, since both characters are quite stubborn it certainly made for some fun and witty banter between those two!
The writing style is fluid, well developed, and at a steady pace.
I like that this book touches on many topics such as love, romance, friendship, second chances, determination, devotion, growth, faith, hope, fantasy, magic, moving on, starting over, new beginnings, overcoming obstacles, and so much more!
This book is book five of the Soul Mate Tree Book Series. Each book in this series is written by a different author, but all of them tie in to the Soul Mate Tree theme. Therefore, each book can easily be read on its own. This was my first book in the series and I did not have any trouble reading it or get lost in the story.
I will be reading and reviewing additional books in this series and look forward to sharing my take on those books with you soon!
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend this book to all romantic, fantasy readers!

This is the perfect romance for readers who like a little magic and a lot of hot. Mark starts as a crabby alpha who undergoes a transformation. He’s got the smoldering and glaring down. While this isn’t the type of romance hero I typically enjoy reading, he is well-developed and a great character for readers who enjoy their bad boys.
I have a lot of respect for Athena. She’s not afraid to look pretty. She isn’t the wild woman I see so often in romance—the type who wear clothes that show off their bodies because they’re trying to use sex appeal on everyone. She just enjoys looking nice, and I could relate to that. I like to get dressed up, sometimes for no real reason. It just feels nice, and that seems to be a mindset that’s not captured in romance books too often. It was great to see here.
While the two leads felt real and fleshed-out, the rest of the characters seemed a bit one-dimensional. Mark’s daughter comes in, does her thing, and then kind of wanders out of the story. She felt less like a character and more like a plot device. Similarly, the school teacher Mark thinks he wants to be with felt like she was there only to show that a “safe” woman isn’t the right one for mark. Her personality felt drabber than it should have been, even for a sweet homebody woman. The conflict, both sexual and otherwise, is strong throughout the story, and the ending brought everything together nicely. This was a nice, different addition to the Soul Mate Tree series.

This is a very fast paced, mildly paranormal romance that was easy to read. I never was able to like or relate to either of the protagonists very much.Read more
