Connor is Austin's friend from book one. You remember him right? Ok, put it on the list after you read this one.
Mack, bartender and Connor the chef are in their usual head to head, argue/ playful banter. Mack thinks he's a man whore and has no problem telling him to his face; and everything else she dislikes about him. The banter between these two is comical yet there is a serious side to it as well. I can't describe them, think bottle rockets on July 4th.
Things change when Sam comes in to talk to them; Diggers is no longer pulling a profit so the plan is to tear down, rebuild and start anew, right down to the menus. She offers Mack and Connor each part ownership, which they're both receptive to. This is also where the two paths diverge in a huge way.
He's got his ideas as chef, she's got her ideas for drinks but the main issue and the most contentious is she wants to name it Mackenzie's. He just goes over the edge. He doesn't offer up a better name, it's just a major sticking point. Add to this these two are now burning up the sheets, bar, picnic blanket.... and the steam and chemistry is just amazing. Connor explains to her why he hung around all this time-3 years when her biggest fear is that he'll always leave. What he doesn't understand is the reasoning beneath her fears. But the door has opened for conversation, and that at times runs from the ridiculous to the sublime in the very best of ways.
An innocent night out with Abbi, who I could have stuck my foot right square up her backside (she got on my nerves in a huge way), a great night between Connor and Mack and they're all having breakfast the next morning when Abbi starts running her mouth. Mack tells her to can it, she doesn't and Connor is crushed. Connor turns the tables on Mack, not knowing what she's been through and even though he's hurt he cuts her in pieces. I get where he was coming from, I also clearly see Mack's side. I see two people who couldn't sit and have an honest conversation out of fear.
So Connor does exactly what Mack has always feared he'd do. He leaves. She goes over to apologize and to make things right and it's over. He's packed and leaving. He feeds right into her insecurities and into his own feeling of less than.
Rebecca couldn't have written a more deep, emotional story about two people who want something (love) from each other and can't seem to get on the same page. It's been three years. The backstory is great. You don't have to read book one, this stands alone. The characters, ( minus Abbi) (I don't like her ok? Get over it) are real people with half a wit and intelligence. The complexities of the drinks and the food menu is great. Nothing in here not to love.
Couldn't have been better and the ending.... ahh.... gotta read the book. Sorry.
Great story Rebecca!! I loved it!! Bring on book 3
