The 2nd edition is written in a highly engaging and direct style, without the pomposity and verbosity that academics are prone to use. The book contains solid advice and specific recommendations and examples that would benefit academics at all levels of experience. First and foremost, the book explains the challenges teaching online, and then explains the further challenges that exist when one tries to make a living doing so as an "adjunctpreneur." From there, the book provides a roadmap to landing jobs in a highly competitive environment. Results of research as to what qualities administrators are seeking during hiring are discussed. Specific examples of cover letters and CVs are shared. Interview tips are provided. Methods for obtaining additional employment and evaluating opportunities are examined. Classroom management and instructional efficiency techniques are also explored. The book concludes with recommendations on tech must-haves, time management, and "lessons learned."
Regardless of whether you've taught over 1,000 courses, like myself, or are just trying to break into or expand your opportunities in academia, this book contains valuable content. It's an enjoyable read all around. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn what online teaching entails or how to succeed on this career path.
Make no mistake: If you want to teach online, THIS is the book to have, to read, and keep handy as a reference guide. Highly recommended!
