Regardless of other masters I have studied and practiced with, Lama Surya Das has a unique way of explaining and adapting profound buddhist concepts and practices into ones readily accesible and understandable to non-buddhists and also providing advanced and experienced practitioners with simple and kind key point reminders. I highly recommend all of his books to anyone, including those who are already trying to live radical non-denominational dzogchen buddhism and transmit the dharma in their daily thoughts words and activities.

I know how to focus on my breath to make myself feel calm and happy, but what's the point if I don't know ...

In my opinion, mindfulness practice isn't that meaningful or honorable unless you know how to use it to benefit others. This book teaches exactly that: how to use mindfulness to connect with and help other beings. For a while now I've felt dissatisfied with my mindfulness practice: I know how to focus on my breath to make myself feel calm and happy, but what's the point if I don't know how to share this happiness and calm with others? If you want to learn how to share the benefits of your mindfulness practice with others, then this book is a great place to start.

My favorite practice in the book is called "Tonglen." The way I practice Tonglen in my daily life is by "breathing in" whatever the current situation is that I'm faced with, and "breathing out" love, compassion, and good energy to whatever the situation is (e.g. conflict, work at the office, traveling on the bus or in traffic, in social situations with others, etc). By breathing the situation in you let go of resistance, aversion, or the desire to run away or ignore. Then you breathe out warm compassionate attention and good energy towards the situation, choosing to act in whatever way you feel would be most beneficial to the situation. If that all sounds too complicated, you can try just breathing in a way that feels most comfortable and nourishing to you, and then imagine that good energy emanating out towards others. Cheers.

Excellent Lessons On Living A More Fulfilling Life

This is book is quite different than the previous books I had read by Surya. I had some trouble getting into some of the early chapters that encouraged partner-based meditation exercises and tantric sex practices, but after getting past that, I thought the book had excellent advice on how to commune better with the immediate world we interact with and the greater universe. As always, Surya's writing is very down-to-Earth and easy to read. He offers lots of great meditation exercises. But, as he says himself, the trick is to actively put his techniques and advice into practice long after putting the book down. I'm sure I will re-read this book in full and in parts in years to come, much like I have his previous work.

You eat a hot dog, it's done, yet you can go back to this book time after time as a reminder, or just open to any page, and get some brilliant words of wisdom to bring you right back to who you are!

This is a beautiful book that reminds us who we are, that we are all one, and through co-meditation, intermeditation, and remindfulness, that plus a decent spice of humor, helps us get back to our true essence.

Lama Surya Das is part genius, part beautiful "mad scientist of the Buddha" and all heart, and his book, like a hot dog made with everything is delicious. I can't recommend it enough! Thank you for your beautiful words of wisdom, gift-wrapped with relish, topped with mustard, and with a side of humble gratitude.

This book is a treasure for those who wish to easily understand ancient Buddhist teachings in a fun and flowing way. Lama Surya Das is a true master, not just because of his awakened life, and decades of intense Buddhist training, but also his truly accessible teaching style makes it possible for anyone who wants to live a happier, more peaceful, more connected life. Spot on and fun to read!

He is able to draw on many wisdom traditions and connect dots in a way that is gentle, funny, and heart opening. This is the third book of his that I’ve purchased and I’m so thankful that he is able to communicate the Dharma in a way that makes me laugh and cry, often on the same page.

Lama Surya Das elegantly writes about several Buddhist practices designed to dissolve the notion of an ego or self and becoming one with all sentient beings. Most practices are derived from Tibetan lineages and it's a great introduction to some Mahayana/Vajrayana aspects. Several topics are covered that pertain to situations we all find ourselves in at some point in this life. There are some very beautiful messages in this book. I would recommend this to Buddhists and non Buddhists alike.
