Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Grover, an independent scholar in American history, has written a meticulously researched and fascinating examination of almost 200 years of African American life in Geneva, New York, a small Northern city. Based upon sources ranging from newspapers to interviews to census data, this work depicts a richly varied black community. The title reveals the central theme: faced with an essentially racist and hostile white majority, black Genevans applied a variety of strategies to "make a way"-ranging from accommodation to mild protest. This unique study is highly recommended for academic collections.

Review

Afro-American life in the North from 1790-1965 is traces in a title which gathers Afro-American writings in a Geneva, New York community. Narratives combine with demographic analysis and surveys of migration patterns to consider the changing race relations and lifestyles which influenced community development. -- Midwest Book Review
