- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2018"Tips" is an understated word to describe what's going on in this book. Yes, you can read it on that level, and if you're a person who keeps tools and uses them to build and/or fix stuff you'll find this book chock-a-block with forehead-slapping "why didn't I think of that" advice that will make your shop projects faster, better, and more enjoyable. But that's not the only thing that's going on here by a long shot. This book is nothing less than a capstone course in outside-the-box thinking, and even if you never directly use even one of the specific "tips" it contains, you'll come out the other side a much better creative problem solver than you went in, just by virtue of having absorbed so many great and original ideas.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2019I'm not the most handy person when it comes to fixing things- I get the help of a friend when I can. Well, this book is like having that friend right there. Plus, the book doesn't drink all your beer, or take the tools away because you're a klutz!
It's organized well, so you can quickly zero in on specific help. But you can also browse through it and learn a lot by just opening it and starting to read. The tips are short, but they're told in a way that makes them memorable, like little stories.
It's a great gift for the hobbyist that has everything, or for people like me. So many great ideas, brought together in a useful way.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2018Whether you're a die hard DIY-er or an occasional tinkerer, this book will make it easier. The author compiles practical advice into easy to use categories that you can use as a reference. I have used his hints to concoct a home made substitute for a commercial product, drill more accurate holes, make glue work better, and get more utility out of common tools. I find myself referring to it for advice before starting anything hands-on. Usually there's a better or faster way than I thought of. There are many how-to books. This one is easy to use and gives practical solutions.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2021There is some very good advice in here, but there is relatively more bad advice, some repeated tips, and a ton of general platitudes that people with experience will have already run across many times. So, if this book is aimed at beginners, then those without experience will be sent down a conflicting path. Some advice advocates strict adherence to forethought and craftsmanship where other advocates not-quite-clever shortcuts that will lead to poor results, albeit somewhat quickly. A beginner won't have the experience to differentiate between the two.
Bad advice? Using a Sharpie as Engineering Blue is an example. I've seen Sharpies stain metal enough to need to be sanded off. The advocacy is that Sharpies are easy to find where Blue isn't. That may be true but Blue is still pretty easy to find--I got my last bottle through Amazon. This "tip" is also repeated twice in a handful of pages. Using a caulking gun as a clamp is another. Finding two loose pieces of scrap lumber, squared enough to not slip apart and then finding a very specific clamping job that would center on the caulk gun piston but be small enough to clear the caulk gun body so the entire thing doesn't spring apart under tension sounds much more tedious than just using a clamp. "If it's stupid but it works, it's not stupid" is another example. If it's stupid but it works (for the moment), it's likely to eventually fail and is possibly dangerous. To me, this is said between tradespeople when they see a peer being lazy, but getting away with it.
Platitudes? The well-worn if-it-moves/doesn't, duct-tape/WD-40 line is here--and I think repeats itself as well. I've never found anyone with skill and experience using duct-tape to fix or build anything, or spray-and-pray with WD-40 (which isn't a lubricant). I'm not saying either doesn't have its limited uses, but that's certainly not a "workshop tip," more like something people say over a beer to get a quick laugh.
There is some very good advice in here. Cutting foam with an electric carving knife, using a PTFE mat as a protective surface are two that immediately come to mind.
The too-long-didn't-read version is that if you already have some experience and take the time to measure correctly, work safely and not take error-inducing shortcuts, there is maybe enough here to justify the price and time investment. I think for most that find the content to be new or somehow hugely useful will eventually struggle since there is some real hack advice present--and I mean hack in the old shop-rat way of being sloppy.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2018There are a LOT of neat tricks in this book. As an old guy myself (well, 64), I've stood at the feet of many a clever soul over the years, and I've read a lot, too, so I already knew probably 60% of the material. But the other 40% was worth the price of admission. If you're a kid just starting out in the trades, or in life, get this book. Even if you think you've seen it all, I bet you don't beat 90% of this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2018A breezy fun read from a committed artisan and box buster. You come away with tips that make those sudden “emergency”
issues in so many projects, preventable, or fixed with ingeniously clever approaches. My bro-in-law, who is a licensed builder, was
reading my copy at the beach last week and said he was buying a copy for each of his team members and predicted the book would pay for itself from the tips and logic applied, teaching them how to scratch their brains and not just their heads.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2018My dad was a electrician. I helped on side jobs now and then. He also was a decent carpenter and wall paper hanger. So there has been some osmosis. I have been mucking around in electronics, a little 3d printing for about 10 years. So I've been around various tool for the many decades of my life. There are many common sense tips in this book. It is worth reading and pursuing now and then.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2021I am not a big maker, but I found this book not only informative, but actually entertaining.
The level of what my father called "redneck engineering" is very nice to see spreading.
Whether you are a maker or someone who just has to make do with what you have I highly recommend this book.
