I still can't play worth a darned but as a amateur luthier, my friends and family are amazed at how well I can make their "piece of junk" guitars sounds awesome with the skills learned in this book. I had a half-body Takamine acoustic and an off-brand electric guitar that were hard to play and made me want to quit with sore fingers. The electric had a bad buzz on the high-e string that would never go away and was ruining my score on RockSmith PS3. This book gave me the skills to solve the problems!

Although the book is titled for "Electric Guitar", many of the tools and techniques are applicable to acoustics as well. Highly recommend for anyone who 'hates' their guitars action. One of my "junk" electric guitars (purchased from a pawn shop and restrung) was so hated by friends and family for it's every-string-is-different height, action and playability that I almost threw it away. I used the techniques in this book and spent an afternoon completely re-tuned, corrected the intonation and re-strung it, adjusted the action and now that "junk" guitar is the go-to instrument for anyone who visits and wants to play!

This book is a must-have for every guitarist!

Great book that will show you how to fix 99% of your guitar nuisances. What's really cool is you can make a fairly cheap foreign made guitar actually pretty fun & satisfying to play! You can't turn a Ford Escort into a BMW, but you can make it almost drive like one.

I have been playing guitar for about 26 years at this point and have always wanted to know how to set up my guitars. It costs at least $40 to have it professionally done, but the thorough information in this book should be enough. Actually, way more than enough. A lot of other information is covered in this book, including Dan Erlewine's opinions on bridges, tremolos, how to evaluate a new guitar for damage and what needs to be done in a set up, and a lot more. The book even includes a DVD and pop out cardboard radius gauges to help with setup! For just over $20 new! I've been a fan of StewMac(Stewart MacDonald) for a long time. Dan Erlewine has written books for them and specializes in new product development, including designing new guitar tools. He's a definite master luthier, and his opinions are objective, formed through years of hands on experience. His writing style is also easy to follow, and there are good diagrams and photos to illustrate what he's talking about. I've done some work on guitars before including refinishing a guitar, rewiring a 1965 Fender Mustang, adjusting bridge heights and truss rods, but this book makes me realize how much more there is to know. I can't wait to use this information to set up my 60s Silvertone Jupiter and Harmony Bobkat.

This book covers a wide range of topics but any in depth adjustments are avoided. You'll often read something along the lines of "Take your guitar to a luthier" and (rarely) be told to by Erlewine's other book "GuitarPlayer Repair Guide" which is an exceptional book! It's a great book if you want to learn how to make simple adjustments like straightening your neck or changing strings, but if you're looking for more then just buy the other book.

Although this book is entitled "How to Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great", this is not a "how to" book. It's laid out in chapters based on each process involved in any particular set up. The author guides you through each section with plenty of examples from his extensive personal experience. But while it's very informative and a decent read, this book doesn't serve as the step-by-step guide I was looking for.

Great book to keep around as a reference. Lots of good info, and Dan is a great demonstrator.

You can get a lot of the same info online, but having it handy is so nice.

If you do any of your own setup work, you'll know some of what is in this book already. That said, there's a LOT of useful little tidbits in the book/video.

I have bought other reprair books, but compare to this they were more pamphlets. This book covers alot ,it does not just cover Fender and Gibson, other brands are showned. It even has radius gauges included ,they also show you how to make some tools. When all else fails there is a dvd to show you what to do(SWEEET!). Amost have for any player.

A very insightful and handy reference book. The author does a great job of explaining his work and has plenty of tricks of the trade he shares. The included DVD and cutout templates in the back are a great bonus. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about what makes a guitar work and it's maintenance.
