Bought this as something to do with my daughter other than playing games and watching TV. She's recently picked up a chewing gum addiction so I figured she'd love this.

Of course when I got it out of the box she was bouncing with excitement.

Some initial comments on it. First DON'T use it in the microwave. Just take the time to do it on the stove, it only took about 10 minutes to heat the chicle to the point where it was workable. Microwaving you run the risk of the tray melting which would leave a horrible mess everywhere. The chicle is extremely sticky until you incorporate the corn syrup. If you get any in the pan the water keeps it from sticking. It's just easier, and the tray wont melt.

Ok, now to the actual review. The little story contained in the kit was interesting, my daughter really learned something from it and can recite the origins of the chicle and the trees it comes from, and as a bonus I got to teach her about the phases of matter from boiling the water as well as melting the chicle.

It is hot so you'll need to do some of the work at first, but once you incorporate the corn syrup and start incorporating the sugar and flavoring its cool enough. She loved getting messy and having some fun rolling and squishing the mixture and putting the flavors in. It was completely doable for a 4 year old. (She just turned 4).

The finished product turned out pretty darn good too. It's sweet enough, the flavors are decent, and the texture is perfect. She absolutely loves chewing it and it made about 30 decent size pieces of gum. I enjoy it too, even though the flavor doesn't last that long it remains sweet and holds it's texture for the hours that I chewed it.

I'd definitely buy it again and she's asking already when we can make some more. That earns 5 stars in my book.

I purchased several kits to enhance our science program during Vacation Bible School and the kids loved making the chewing gum. It was a pretty sticky activity but the gum easily washed off their hands and face. We limited the activity to 8 to 11 year-olds and they were very enthusiastic about it. The instructions are easy to follow but I would recommend just allowing the kids to roll and knead the gum in the confectioner's sugar and flavoring and making gum balls. The flavor doesn't last long but the fun is in the making of the gum and understanding where gum comes from not in the end product. We used one kit for 6 to 8 children and that gave them each a nice piece of gum at the end.

Awesome and fun with cool information about the making of and history of gum. Chewing gum is very sticky, however and tricky to clean, but don't let that put you off. It's good family learn-u-cational fun.

Wanted to make this for a long time.. but it's hard to find the gum base. So this kit is perfect. It has all the ingredients. I did add some food coloring to it. The steps are easy to follow. The only thing is that it doesn't keep the flavor that long. But it's more about knowing how it's made ;-)
I saw some other kits that say to add flavoring when you are adding the corn syrup.. this kit says to knead it in when your gum is the texture of already gum.. So maybe that's why the flavor isn't that strong. I thought of maybe adding like jello powder or something.

Anyway.. Apart from the 'not lasting flavor' it's a fun activity for your kids and even for yourself.

We used this kit and were pleased with the results. The kit contains all the materials you need to make a hefty amount of cinnamon or peppermint gum. Also included is an informative instruction sheet that discusses green issues and the rain forest as well as low-level science explanations.

The written materials, including instructions, are well done. Everything you need is in the kit. You get lots of tasty gum. On the negative side, there is a lot of stirring and kneading of thick material.

My 5 year old daughter and I did this together, and she loved this. Yes, it is a little messy, and no the flavor does not last forever, but that simply is not the point! She beamed with pride at her creation and had everyone try some. It was not that bad at all. :) Mostly, I like toys like this because it is time we spend together, accomplishing something.

As many people have said, the fun is in making this; it will not substitute for the gum you buy. And just to make the process easier, know that you can melt the gum base (the little beads) a lot more easily in a glass bowl in the microwave than in the black plastic pan, which warps and melts even with supervision. We had to do this after my daughter neglected to read the instructions correctly and ruined the black pan. Making the gum is not a difficult, multiple-step process, but I think anyone under 12 would find the instructions hard to decipher without help. We did all the kneading and pulling and rolling as instructed, not excessively, and the result was very tough gum. It did have the proper texture, but the flavor never penetrated the gum, thus after a minute - literally, we were left with a tough, tasteless wad. One poster said she chewed this for hours; I cannot imagine how. If this is ever reformulated, I'd suggest that 1. the flavoring be added earlier in the process, and 2. a softener be added in the kneading. I would not buy it again.
