4.0 out of 5 stars Good starter book, although we had some minor setbacks
By AZmom on November 17, 2015
My 10 year old saw this and wouldn't leave the store without it. I am a novice at sewing and learned to sew in home-ec 30 years ago, so I'm a little rusty. A few years ago we sewed homemade bean bags (not the chair style, the hand thrown squares) and he's been wanting another sewing project for stuffed "pals." This looked simple enough and I thought it would be a wonderful mother/son project.
First problem I encountered was fabric. The book does not specify how much fabric to purchase with each project. Since both of us were making our own (I was making a winged bunny for my two year old), we ended up with enough fabric to make 6!
Second problem was partially my fault. I read the book through once before starting the project, but I didn't realize I needed to tape my pattern together until I was ready to sew my pieces together. My son was not happy and wanted to follow the directions exactly (he is a perfectionist and I was glad I had extra fabric). But by that time he had his face and eyes sewn on. I had to rip the stitches out, which I think my son lost his patience with sewing at that point and was disappointed. He did a really great job sewing it on the first time. Needless to say, it has now been 2 weeks, and he has not touched his project again. I ended up using a sewing machine on his face the second time and I used it for various part on my project.
My third and final problem was embroidery thread. The book does state you don't *need* it, but I have discovered that using it enhances the look of your project. I used regular thread on some parts and I'm sorry I didn't use embroidery thread for those. The problem was I know nothing about embroidery thread. So, after going to the craft store and spending yet more $$$$ on embroidery floss (I had plenty of machine embroidery thread) and tangling my first thread to the point of it being non-useable, I turned to you tube for answers.
So, although I found this book to be a great starter book, I had some set backs.
I would recommend this book as it has some cute ideas for stuffed loves. I plan on making additional stuffies for my youngest, but I hope my 10 year old follows through and finishes his project. It would be sad all that hard work not to have a finished piece.
