Cutout for the GPIO pins is too narrow for a standard connector
3 Stars
Cutout for the GPIO pins is too narrow for a standard connector
The cutout for the GPIO pins is too narrow. Most standard 40 pin ribbon cable connectors are 55-56mm. The cutout for the GPIO header is 54mm. Oh, so close. But, no cigar. You have to use an extender; so more money. I had to use a long extender as even the standard height extender was too short. I think this could've been considered in the design. But, these heat sinks aren't very expensive. So, I guess you get what you pay for.The heatsink is substantial and heavy. It comes with thermal pads which will be necessary to keep the ICs cool (CPU, RAM, GPU). You might have to stack a couple of pads to get the CPU to mate with the heat sink. But, it keeps my RPi 2 B (pictured) at about 38C. So, that is good. Stress tests showed that it could keep my RPi to about 50-55C. Without the heat sink mine tested to about 65-70C under stress inside a plastic case. So, it does its job keeping things cool.I wouldn't buy this heatsink if you using using your RPi for physical computing (blinking LEDs, sensors and motors). It will take you some effort and extra goodies to get a breadboard connected. But, if you are using your RPi for games or learning to code, then this will probably be just fine for keeping your RPi from overheating.

This case was a gift to my son for his new RPI it travels with him back and forth to school daily holds up well to backpacks tossed around cools effectively...

Mine has been running continuously for several months. Fan buzz becomes noticeable in a quiet room. But usually don’t hear it. Keep screws tightened to reduce noise. Honestly, with the Pi outside of an enclosure, as it is in the video, I don’t see an appreciable difference in temp whether the fans are on or off.

It is a well made case, it fits my RPI B3+ perfectly.
Observations: The fans are inset into the upper heat sink. What this does is only provide short little fins upon which they blow. The air then exits to the side where there are few cooling fins. the other fins are not aligned at all to receive any of the air flow. The unit works fine, it will keep an unclocked RPI 3B+ running at 100% (5 GLXGears default windows) at around 52c which is fine as long as it is below 60c when the GPU starts to throttle down.
So it does what it says it will do. If you want super cooling, don't expect it. The thermal pads that come with it are 1 mm thick. On my UK built RPI, the two sides come together just enough to firmly touch the thermal pads. I filed down the support pillars so as to allow a closer fit (~.25 mm). this cause the thermal pads to depress significantly more, reducing temps about 4c. I may even take a bit more off and just use thermal paste instead, I hate thermal pads, especially thick ones.
It works fine, if I were to buy another similar case, I would probably get one with all fins (and thin ones at that, no inset fans) and then mount one ~40mm fan on top of each side. This would allow more OC possibilities.

Used this heatsink for 2gb asus tinkerboard. Have to put copper pads on all chips to ensure reach of heatsink. Fans are ok but was replaced with old 486 fan at 5v. Keeps tinkerboard cool under full load.

Hammering the 4 CPU with Gzip compressions of files on a tmpfs for like 10min and the temp never went over 55 Celsius, thinking on overclocking it to get the extra 100 or 200 Mhz per core.
