Purchase options and add-ons

Will a magnet pick up a paper clip or a feather? The answer is, just the paper clip. Magnets only pick up things that contain bits of iron. In this new addition to the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series, veteran author Franklyn Branley explains the properties and behavior of magnets. True Kelley's charming illustrations will entertain readers as they discover for themselves what makes a magnet. Hands-on activities include making a magnet and compass.

This is a fun book that can be used to teach magnetism to young children.
I like the fact that this book has color cute pictures of a little girl and a mouse adventuring. I also like the fact that it has a little bit about history a little information on the earth loadstone magnetism how compasses work. It’s a great book and I would definitely recommend it to other moms and other teachers. There are some fun activities in this book using materials that can easily be found around the house or classroom. This book gives a little bit of ancient history and teachers about how a Compass works. I even learned about lodestone and how it used to be hung from the string to help people in ancient times find their way.

Another great book in the series to add to the collection! I have several books in the "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science" series and my preschooler and I enjoy all of them. "What Makes A Magnet" explains what a magnet is and how they're used in a way that a child can understand while still keeping it interesting for adults. It also goes back to show the origin of how we found out about magnets and how they were first used by early explorers. It has several fun and easy ideas for experiments that you can do to follow along and try it for yourself. Well written, nicely illustrated, and entertaining!

Branley has helped educate my grandson (4 yrs old) about so many every day scientific topics in such a manner that my grandson keeps wanting yet another book. I have bought him nearly every one that has been published. The illustrations are marvelous. My grandson started reading to first grade classes at the age of 4 and I credit Branley's work for being a stimulus. Branley's work engages the children with words found in their language. The flow of material readily helps them see/relate to the topics. My grandson, now 5, is at stage 2 so the stories are a bit more complex but the challenge is healthy for him and he gets excited by it. Great author with a very impressive resume and his illustrator really brings it all together for the children.

The Let's Read and Find Out series has been a big hit in our family. They are very well done for young children, full of information and good pictures without being detailed beyond their age group.

I bought this title about magnets as the children are having such a good time with their Magna-Tiles toys. I thought they'd enjoy learning about what causes magnetism. The book explains that well but there is a long section involving an experiment that requires a sewing needle, not an object I'd ever hand to a young child and even more so with a baby sister crawling around. It's hard to read the book without the child expecting to do the experiments with needles--and maybe trying it on his/her own.

So be prepared to exercise a lot of caution with this book if you buy it. Otherwise, it's very good.

I was playing with magnets with my kid, and he asked me how they work. I had no idea, and I wanted to find a good book that would explain it to both of us easily. This one really was perfect. I read it to all my kids, from 8 to 14, and we all enjoyed it. I had some magnets around to play with as we read about them which made it even more fun, and I can say I definitely learned some things I had no idea about. Quality book with easy to understand information.

I purchased this for my 5-year old nephew along with a Magformers set. The age range says 4-8, and I believe it would be a good fit for that entire range. It offers hands on discovery projects to be done with adult supervision, and the information can be tailored to various levels of learning. Interesting and well done early science text.

This is a fantastic book that holds my 6 year old grand son's attention, is fun for him to read and teaches him science concepts simultaneously. I wanted scientific content explained on a basic level he could understand and read for himself. This book is perfect in that regard and is fun as well. He consistently chooses this book as well as the other Lets-REad-And-Find-OUt-Science books that I have purchased for him. THAT is worth 5 stars to me.

What a good book to use when introducing children to magnetism! It engages the child right away to explore what is magnetic or not by gathering various common things at home. My 2nd grader enjoyed reading the book to me while also trying the experiments. I even learned a couple things about magnetism!

We have most of the Level 1 books. They are a great introduction to science for little children. The only reason these don't get five stars is because a slightly bigger font size would have made these books excellent.

We love all the books in this series, they're so well priced its tempting to overlook them, but don't.Very well written.Simple enough for young children and their middle-aged mummies to understand, but thorough enough to actually learn and understand something new. I did with this book.Good practical ideas too
