Editorial Reviews

The incredibly talented singer-songwriter for the Model Rockets during the 90s, John Ramberg has also been known as the Minus 5's 'secret weapon' on lead guitar and lead and backing vocals, working along side Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck (R.E.M.). Ramberg has also written, recorded and toured with country chanteuse Neko Case. Between four studio albums and many tours of Spain with the Model Rockets, Ramberg began work on a solo album with the help of McCaughey and drummer Bill Rieflin (R.E.M., Ministry, Minus 5). Those sessions evolved into the formation of the group The Tripwires with his pals, Johnny Sangster (Mudhoney,The Posies), Jim Sangster (The Fastbacks, Young Fresh Fellows, Sgt Major, The Picketts) and drummer Mark Pickerel (Screaming Trees, Mark Pickerel and His Praying Hands, Neko Case). The group has honed its live set with regular gigs at Seattle clubs as well as at the SXSW Music Fest in Spring of 2007. The album is a rollicking blend of rock 'n' roll that has its roots in the pub rock of Dave Edmunds & Rockpile, the bar band sound of NRBQ, and the giddy upbeat sound of The Young Fresh Fellows. The album was recorded and mixed by Kurt Bloch (Mudhoney, Nashville Pussy, John Wesley Harding). With great harmonies, rockin' beats, and fantastic guitar playing, the Tripwires are the new heirs to the throne of rock n' roll.

This is a great rock album, and is one of my favorites -- so far -- for 2007. If you enjoy the music of Rockpile or Big Star, if you crave Beatles-esque harmonies, if you just want an album of great rock to get you through the winter, this is it. My favorite track is "Big Electric Light" but they are all great. The Tripwires took a long time to create this masterpiece, but it is well worth it.

I agree with Steven, this is a great CD - grown-up pop that rocks very nicely
