Making the Big Red Machine: Bob Howsam and the Cincinnati Reds of the 1970s Paperback – Illustrated, April 13, 2009

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

With a line-up that included future Hall of Famers Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez and Pete Rose, Cincinnati's "Big Red Machine" powered its way in the 1970s to six division titles, four pennants, and two World Series. Three other times in that decade they finished second in their division to the eventual pennant winner.

While much has been written about the players and manager Sparky Anderson, no book until now has given adequate attention to the man behind the Machine, general manager Bob Howsam. From his hire in 1967 through the end of his first stint with the Reds in 1978, Howsam brought about a remarkable change in fortune for the Reds, who had claimed only one pennant in the 26 years before his arrival. This detailed history of baseball's last dynasty shows not only how the team performed but why, delving into the off-field strategy and moves behind the Reds' success.

I bought this book as a gift for my 84 year old father. This is a great read for people who remember the big red machine. The only problem is the print is extremely tiny. Fortunately, he has been able to read it, but it may be very difficult for some to be able to see the print

I didn't know a lot of about Bob Howsam before reading this book, but the author provides excellent insight into Mr. Howsam's life, character, baseball in a different era, and what led him to becoming a successful GM of the Cincinnati Reds from 1967-78. Even better, there are a lot of great tips that can be used in business and everyday life. They are:

1. Good communication
2. Learn everything about the business you're in
3. Find a mentor and shadow them
4. Deal with problems right away
5. Treat your employees like a family and get to know them
6. Hire good people and let them do their jobs
7. Don't be afraid to take risks
8. Be honest and professional
9. Maintain standards
10. Embrace change if there's a good benefit to doing so

This book is not only for those of us who grew up with the Big Red Machine, but also for the new generation of baseball fans. The history of the players are discussed along with strategy behind the players. At the same time the book is a great primer for learning sports management techniques, in fact the leadership techniques can be used for any business. I highly recommend the book. Don't expect the to read the book like a novel, it is loaded with facts and information. I don't think there will ever be another team like the Big Red Machine!

Even if you are only a casual fan of the Big Red Machine, this is a great book to read! Everyone knows what the BRM did, but how they did it was always a great mystery. The author really brings out the character of the players and how their chemistry was created. I just wish the Reds dynasty had carried over throughout the 80's as well.
