this is a very excellent book which i read quickly and learned a lot from. i have a pretty decent background in what's going on in the middle east, israel in particular, but nonetheless i learned much to add to my frame of reference. muravchik writes very well; his writing is clear and jargon-free, and he is very adept at pulling together the various factors that are and have been involved in transforming israel from a country whose exploits and people were cheered -- into a pariah state. he writes how the palestinians took lessons from russia in propaganda and reinvented themselves from a people proclaiming that they would push israel into the sea into a liberation movement that regarded israelis into a colonizing and oppressing people, which got the sympathies of leftists everywhere. add a healthy (or unhealthy, actually) dose of anti-semitism, always present in both right and left wing activists and many muslim activists, and you have a recipe for seriously worrisome trends in europe and the middle east which could have dire consequences for israel.
i have recommended this book to many people. it's a must-read.
