Interesting premise, hard to play

After setting the game on its easiest setting, I played the 3rd Reich setting out to conquer Europe in 1939. Turning on my Italian ally was easy, and I quickly conquered France, Spain, and Italy. (Quickly in wargaming terms means taking the entire afternoon.)

At this point, history diverged, and the Soviet Union started fighting the British Alliance. Japan never signed a pact with Italy or Germany. As I worked to conquer France and eastern Europe, Britain would occasionally take over a province or two. I wish the game did a better job of notifying you when an enemy invades. Why silly events get a popup message, yet the UK taking all of Austria goes unnoticed, I can't understand. If you let yourself get distracted in one theater, watch out. Ten turns later, half of Germany is conquered and you didn't know it.

Humorously, the Americans got ticked off at Britain and started attacking their ally! So much for the "intimate partnership". It's interesting changes like this that are rewarding to an armchair general. History can change on a whim, and it's great to see how things ebb and flow in a global conflict.

The most tedious parts of the game are having to reset towns after reconquering them, they are always set to idle activity. But this pales in comparison to the worst programming aspect of the game, how you can't simply select a clump of units with your mouse and send them to attack.

In my final battle with the Soviet Union, I had a Kursk-style pocket of Red tanks encircled in Poland. I had them surrounded on all sides, and did a flanking maneuver conquering the Soviet Union while they sat there (remember, this is the easy setting). With my enemy vanquished, I could then attack their 1,000 strong ground force. I did it with 4,000 strong German units, but had to select each manually to send them into battle.

I eventually won, but this game left me with a very tired mouse hand, and no desire to repeat the experience. I hope the sequel was made a little easier to point and click, although that should have been a patch for this game.

Great historical strategy game

This is the best historical strategy game on WWII out there. It is an excellent game for anyone who likes turn based strategy games, regardless or whether or not you're into the second world war. This game is HIGHLY recommended for you Axis and Allies board gamers out there who are languishing for a good computer version (the Axis and Allies computer game is terribly glitchy and should be avoided). Though making history could be a long game when it comes to micromanaging your nations many regions, the micromanagement is not as tedious as in the game Civilization, and the world economic system is extremely good and realistic. Technological research is a bit slow, don't expect to acquire most of the cool stuff -especially if you aren't the U.S. You can play one of eight players, the traditional UK/USA/USSR/Germany/Japan nations, or the minor Nationalist Chinese/France/Italy nations. It would have been nice to see more room for spies and espionage with regards to technology and diplomacy. But at least you aren't forced to duplicate history if you don't want to, a major improvement over other historical strategy games.

Best Game Ever

Seriously, this is the most fun i have ever had with a computer game. The graphics are basic, and the game play is very slow, but it doesn't matter. I've tried many strategy games in the past (civ i, II, III, IV, axis & allies, etc) but this game takes the cake. You can fight WWII any which way you choose. I am still in my first game playing as the US. I have already taken Canada, Ireland, Britain, and Central America. I am allied with the USSR and Japan. However, I think later in the game I am going to regret this alliance, as the USSR is rolling through Europe like a juggernaut. When I am not playing the game, I sometimes find myself thinking about it, planning strategy. I highly recommend this game. You will not be disappointed.

Too Easy

My fifth game, playing as America, I conquered Germany and Italy by 1939 with nothing but stacks of medium tanks. No air force, no navy. Just stacks of tanks. On normal difficulty. Nuff said.
