Raising young people in our complex modern world, with the all-pervading influence of modern communications, loss of traditional social and family structures, and shifting family patterns and relationships, is one of our biggest challenges and something parents want to do well - with little training or support.
Dr Arne Rubinstein brings years of experience as a GP and in emergency medicine to the task of helping us to understand our boys - the world they live in, their growth trajectory, and what they need to make a successful transition from boyhood - and boy psychology - to healthy, responsible manhood. He develops both a framework for understanding of the importance of this transition, and a clear, step by step approach to taking boys on this critical journey in their lives.
It is a delightful read - full of compassion and insight, stories, ideas and examples. And it is something you will come back to, over and over again, if you are part of a family which is raising boys.

I have been involved with men's work and Rites of Passage for about seven years now and nowhere have I seen a clearer presentation of the state of masculinity today; how we got where we are and how to address the challenges facing boys in the world today.
This book served as a manifesto and guide for me to plan, prepare and execute a Rites of Passage for my nephew and I reference it regularly when speaking to parents about the need for boys (and girls) to have healthy male mentoring in their lives.
Please read this book and share it with the parents, teachers, social workers and communities you live in.

Dr Rubinstein explains in simple language just what our boys are going through and what they need from us. It's tough being a parent, and in particular a Mother raising a Son. It seems so foreign to us what they are going through. You often hear it said that being a parent doesn't come with an instruction manual. Well, now it does! This books was invaluable in helping me maintain a loving and open relationship with my teenage son.

In a world that is telling more and more boys they aren't needed, are difficult, or in other words, aren't girls. Making Men is timely and needed. Dr. Arne has covered the details for both boys in nuclear and broken families. A must read for anyone raising boys.

Great ideas don't always have to cost a lot of money, and this book is sparkling example of that. I don't have my own children, but I do have a big of mob of nieces & nephews and have given a copies of this book to many family members and to friends - only after they asked me to get them one. Proud to say that they're all great parents, but like many parents they'd like to be even better. This book offers clear succinct concepts that are practical and achievable. As an aunt to so many, it was good have confirmation that this role which i've luckily had a natural affinity for has and does a play a crucial part in a teenagers life during the somewhat tricky transition years. The case studies and story examples peppered throughout are insightful and honest. It was a pleasure to read this book ...

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Repetitive through out the book
Reviewed in Canada on July 17, 2024
It does have good insight into why boys act out basically because parents treat teenagers like young boys and tell them what to do and how to live their life.

Once, I got halfway through the book. Which was story after story how a young boy either becomes a real man or a childish man. Which was repetitive. I was excited to get to the good part of how to prevent a childish man. And it was beyond repetitive again. Long story short, your boy goes out to the woods for about 4 days with mature men. So that the men can share their life stories (the good and the bad and how they over came the problem) because a teenager learns better form a man's life story (not a women) so he can learn from their stories. Instead of being told what to do. That's the main point I got from the book.

For sure, he is selling his programs in this book, but I happily join a Rop as soon comes a chance, and I wish I could have been in one when I was a teenager.
There are so many insides on teenage psychology and how we can make a difference as parents, as said before, if you are a parent just read it, is a must.

Really easy to follow and realistic about society and the influence it has on our boys in that transition phase. Would recommend to anyone that has a son especially before they start puberty.
