4.5 Angsty Stars.
Each short novella in the Wrench wars series is meant to be light yet steamy, romantic reading, for a few hours of escapism from your daily stressors. My rating is reflected in how I rate books against their peers and others in their series, not every book ever written. This is a short novella, which means in so few pages you can't expect the next bestselling epic novel.
Making Waves was exactly as advertised.
I was entertained. I laughed, and blushed, and emotions were elicited in me, and I couldn't ask for more. Well, yes, I could ask for another Marie Sexton installment of the series (please tell me there will be more?!?)
Ward has been best friends with Dean their entire lives, with Dean being the high-maintenance friend who has to always get his way. In walks in Dean's baby brother, Ash, who has always had a mega crush on Ward. *insert angst here*
Making Waves was a quick read that I thoroughly enjoyed- satisfied, yet left wanting more from the series itself. There was less politics when dealing with the reality program in this installment, solely focusing on the tension and romance, which fit into the story nicely.
I'm a big fan of a well-written novella because I don't have a lot of time to immerse myself in a series or long-winded books while I'm writing. Making Waves was exactly what I needed, fitting into my break.
Book and series recommended to fans of Marie Sexton and LA Witt, short stories and novellas, MM romance, and mechanics. If you need more pages, more than one story thread tying a book together, and more detailing, then perhaps this novella may not be for you.
Note: just as with how some books by a specific author are better than another, depending on the reader's mood and tastes, the books in this series are no different. Most have been hits for me but one was a total miss, but overall I've thoroughly enjoyed the series and I hope there are more to come.
It's not full-on sex, but a lot of getting to know each other, some sweet and sexy teasing and when they do get it on, it's even sweeter and sexier! The tale for me, had enough of everything a romance needs to make it a 5* read, but when I went to page-turn on the Kindle, I found that the book had ended very abruptly, without certain words I needed to hear and without any indication of whether it was the start of a HEA or simply a HFN. Yes, there were words to imply that both guys wanted a HEA, but I as a reader, needed the author's words. This is the reason that the book loses a * for me.

In this episode, Ash, younger brother of Dean is newly hired to work at the garage. Ash is excited to work at the garage because he'll be working along side Dean's best friend since childhood, Ward. Ash has had a crush on Ward since he was 14 and now that he's an adult, he's decided to let Ward know how he feels. Ward is surprised by Ash's flirtations and that he's noticed Ash and not in a brotherly way.
The conflict for Ward and Ash, is Dean. Dean is a jerk who throws temper tantrums, demands to be center of attention, insists everyone's world should revolve around him and when he doesn't get his way, issues ultimatums. But without his character, there would be no conflict or drama. Ward gives in to his attraction to Ash and chooses him when given the ultimatum.
I enjoyed Ward and Ash, and though I didn't have a chance to really connect with them due to the length of the story, I thought their story was good. There wasn't a lot of character development but it can often seem that way when the stories are short. But, maybe as this series goes further, it'll be like a reality tv show and we'll continue to learn more about all the characters. Also, it was nice to get a glimpse of the three couples from the other books, that's exactly what I had hoped would happen since each of their stories had more of a HFN ending. I'm looking forward to reading more in this series!
Rating: 4 stars
While it’s not forbidden in the most typical sense, it still was that way for me.
Ward and Ash were just great characters, and I loved how they were trying to figure out how to work things out with everything that Dean was throwing at them.
Even though this is a shorter book, I was able to connect with both Ward and Ash. That really helped with my enjoyment of the book.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a quick read that will draw you in. Also, while this is part of a series, I do feel like this book could be read as a standalone.
