I was really excited to get this book. When it stated there were TWELVE recipes to making whoopie pies and filling I was really excited. I thought, finally I can make all kinds of different pies. Not the case. Each recipe one change one or two ingredients and/or amount of ingredient. So you really get a recipe for Chocolate pie, 1 vanilla and 1 red velvet. Icing recipe is either with or without marshmallow fluff... I'm sorry, but EVERY single recipe listed is FREE on the internet, which is where the author got them, or was given to her by a bakery... I thought these would be new, exciting recipes and fillings. The author talked about how exciting it is to try different fillings with different cake flavors, such as Peanut Butter or Mint combinations, etc. and did not include any recipes. How are we to make these exciting combinations, when the base recipe isn't included to make them? This is the first time I have ever decided to return a book to amazon. I think it was a complete waste of money.

This book is fun! It includes 16 recipes -- "Classic Chocolate Whoopie I & II" (both feature lots of chocolate, butter & sugar) to Red Velvet Whoopie to Banana Whoopie. Unquestionably my favorite is the "Two Fat Cats Bakery Whoopie Pie with homemade fluff." Variations on the core 16 recipes yield a dozen more. The text/recipes are easy to read, the binding allows the the cookbook to lay flat and the paper is heavy so it's great in the kitchen. It's hard to find anything wrong, it's an outstanding book.

More than just recipes this book will get you up to speed on the whole Whoopie Craze and why they've taken the place of the cupcake and are quickly taking the world by storm. Discover the origins of this sweet treat and a few health varieties, and a Whoopie Pie Festival in Maine you can take the whole family to. Get this book before you make cupcakes one more time, you'll be glad you did. The recipes are wicked easy.

This is a terrific book on one of the nation's great delicacies. Nancy Griffin has brought excellent research, fine writing and a keen sense of fun to the subject -- one which might have fallen flat in less deft care. She combines history with anecdote, facts with opinions, recipes with legend and lore. We learn of the pie's misty history, how its fame grew -- and how to make one. We come to appreciate why it is that people in Maine so fervently claim this humble snack as a state treasure and come to appreciate more why it enjoys such a place in their hearts, and waistlines. It's a fun book worthy of the subject. Three cheers (and three Whoopie Pies) to Nancy Griffin.

Not only is this whoopie-shaped book full of information about whoopies, but it also provides with great and unusual recipes!
Makes your mouth water just by looking at it! Plus, the author has made thorough researches and has probably tried lots of whoopies to give us tips and add fun pictures to her book.
Definitely a must have!

My best friend in Virginia is OBSESSED with whoopie pies. She had never even HEARD of them before I introduced her to them. Imagine that! I grew up in New England, raised by a rabid whoopie-pie-baking-momma. Hers are the BEST. I was so excited about this book, it has great information about the history of whoopie pies and some delicious recipes. I have made several of the recipes in this book and have been very pleased. This book has a bit of everything - it's NOT just a cookbook but also teaches you something about whoopie pies. What's the next book about? Can't wait!

My rating: 2 1/2 stars for the book 4 stars for the actual pie!
There are 16 whoopie pie recipes, 5 are non-traditional ie not real chocolate ones - red velvet, pumpkin, banana etc. I was enjoying the cuteness of the book but as I started going through it I noticed a massive problem. There are only 4 recipes that you can easily make in Australia The other 12 recipes require either "Marshmallow Fluff" or "Vegetable Shortening" - neither of which is easily available in Australia.

I made the banana choc chip pies and they tasted really delicious. The texture is like a muffin but the ratio of choc chips to dough is more like a cookie. Its more like a bunch of choc chips held together by banana cake (no complaints here!). The cream cheese frosting is also a nice touch.
