Hypoid Gears Deliver More Constant Power
The 5477NB has a powerful 15 AMP motor with ball bearing construction for increased productivity. Makita's efficient hypoid gears have greater surface contact and deliver more constant power. The oil bath technology and sealed gear housing are engineered for less maintenance, with high-quality heat-treated hypoid gears for long lasting performance. The 5477NB has a large cutting capacity (2-3/8 inches at 90°, 1-3/4 inches at 45°, 1-9/16 inches at 50°) with a maximum bevel capacity of 0°-51.5° and positive stops at 45° and 51.5°, ideal for truss and rafter cut-outs. The large levers are designed for fast bevel and depth adjustments. In addition, the lower guard design improves performance when making bevel and narrow cuts.

Ease-of-Use Features
Ease-of-use features were also engineered into the saw. An over-sized handle and ergonomically designed rubberized grip provide improved control and comfort. The push button spindle lock and on-board blade wrench are designed for easy blade changes. The reinforced 10-foot cord is made for job site use, with externally accessible brushes for easy replacement and extended tool life. The base plate is chemically treated to resist rust and warping for superior cuts. The 5477NB includes a Makita 7-1/4-Inch General Contractor Framing Blade with Advanced Tooth Design. The carbide tips are specifically set to withstand the harshest conditions such as plowing through nail-embedded wood. The blade is designed with special Makita heat vents strategically set to dissipate heat and increase performance. The 5477NB also includes a blade wrench attached to the saw for fast and convenient blade changing.

Engineered for a Range of Applications
The 5477NB is engineered for framing walls, siding, roofs and floors using a range of dimensional lumber and engineered lumber, including OSB, LVL, PSL, plywood, and more. It is ideal for framers, builders, carpenters, and general contractors seeking a best-in-class 7-1/4-Inch hypoid saw. The 5477NB is just another example of Makita's commitment to innovative technology and best-in-class engineering.

I picked up this saw at HD for around 114. It's a beast so far. I used to have an old skil sidewinder that just didn't cut it for my kind of work (punny!) I just used it today to rip some 10' 2x4s in half and it was great! Anyways, I'll just jump into the pros and cons of this tool.

PROS
Real cheap!
No changing oil AT ALL!!!!
Most powerful circ saw motor on the market that I know of (2300W, I think the Skil hd77 is like 2100)
A bit lighter than other worm drive saws

CONS
Baseplate is off and numbering is hard to read
Circle arbor sucks and sometimes the blade gets loose and spins free so you have to retighten it
Start up kick is pretty bad. You need to start up the saw about one and a half inches back from the material otherwise the kick will knock the blade off your mark
No rafter hook (although I never use it, some people do)

UPDATE!!!!
Almost two years later I still have this saw. I don't use it that much anymore (I got the Bosch 1677) and here's why. The saw simply isn't strong enough to meet the demands of day-to-day professional use. I would definitely recommend this as the best saw a homeowner or DIYer can get but it doesn't have the juice to keep up with framing on a daily basis. I'm still keeping it at 5 stars because this is a really great tool for the price ($114) and it's the top of the line (for the non-pros.)

I have owned my current saw since 1992. I have had no issues ever! (Except changing the cord) Subcontractors will show up on the job with VERY HEAVY worm drive or cheap circular saws that are nearly impossible to see your cut line. I always keep a sharp blade mounted and blow the dust from armature quarterly when I check my cords for OSHA related problems.
This saw is so light, predictable and durable that I would never purchase another brand.

I have used both types of Skil in line saws [worm drives] and have loved them. I needed a new one after 34 years and landed on the Makita while shopping. For $123, I could not pass it up. After using it for the last three months, I can say it's the best in line saw I have ever used. I highly recommend this saw!

As a whole I love the saw. It cuts real clean, is easy to adjust and has plenty of power. The one drawback I noticed right off is it is fairly heavy. One reason I went with the makita is a couple friends had them and they seemed to be lighter than other brands.other than that its a great saw.

I have owned this saw for a bit over a year and it has literally been used and abused every day. I work for a well-known Earthquake Retrofitting company in Seattle so this saw is used constantly for framing work, 2 and 4x framing lumber and plywood. In terms of weight, straightness of cut/line if sight to cutline and balance in my hand it is hands down the best worm drive type saw I've used. The old-school Skill and Bosch worm-drives have maybe a touch more power and can track just as well when used properly. But the weight savings in this modern-design saw take the cake for me. It's a wonderful saw for basic framing and demo purposes at a very good price.

I have had a couple problems that needed fixing, the button for the blade-change lock is plastic. A metal one would be 1000 times better. If you "drop-set" your saw down too roughly in a gravel driveway you can break the button which causes a retaining spring to fly out and the pin for the blade-lock to fall into the casing. The pin will then catch up when you next try to use the saw and crack the case. It is a $12 parts that takes 30 minutes to completely change out, but it was annoying to deal with. It did cause all the oil to leak out and I could not find a place that says what the "correct oil" to replace with is for Makita saws so I used regular Bosch worm drive oil which has worked out fine for the last 3 months.

Overall great saw for the price, but I think for max durability the Magnesium version is a overall better buy because some of the parts are simply that much better.

I bought this to replace an older Craftsman Saw. This is the best priced hypoid/worm drive circular saw out there. I worked in place that had terrible 120V power. Other saws were jamming: This saw powered through everything. I find it easier to use than conventional circular saws.

I debated a bit to rate this as a 4 or a 5 but in fairness I feel I should give it a 5. It's a heavy and powerful saw. I've had the saw for several weeks, a few months even and I've used it for general use around my home shop and quite a bit for a fairly heavy duty project of building a new deer blind. In that project I cut a lot of plywood, 3/8", 3/4", 2 X 4's and 4 X 4's (cuts from opposite sides). I like the plain view from the left hand side as I am right handed. It's probably just different from what I'm used to using over the years but it seems I have a bit more trouble following a line when cutting without a guide than with my old saw. That's the only reason I would rate it less than 5 and that's probably in my court. It's a powerful saw, contractor grade, so be prepared for kick back if the blade gets into a bind and there is no electronic brake. If you need a saw for light duty around the home, this is probably not the best choice for you but I do recommend it for more serious use. It's imported of course but it's well made and seems to be a quality tool.
