The Whiteside collet adapter uses a different approach. From both the top and bottom, through slits are cut most of the length of the adapter. The result is a set of interlocking fingers that run most of the length of the collet. When the outer 1/2" collet is tightened, the fingers press against the shaft for their entire length. It distributes the force well and can better accommodate slight variations in bit shank size. If you need a 1/4" adapter, I recommend the Whiteside...Whiteside 6400 Steel Router Collets 1/4ID 1/2OD
Why I'm Here: I bought this collet as a replacement for my skil router collet.
The bit on my skil router moves after only a few uses. I measuring the Skil collet that came with my router and it appeared lop sided. Not being a collet manufacturer I could only guess that this was an issue. I decided to test my theory and buy this as a replacement.
What You Want to Know: This collet works with my Skil router.
It definitely improved performance. I measured the new collet straight out of the box with calipers. It was built to very high tolerance. +-.001 accuracy. I was impressed. My theory that the skil collet was dog-poop turned out to be correct.
The Fate of My Skil Router: For now it appears to be working better. I think there may be some movement of the bit, but it is hard to tell... I think it has moved, but when I check, my measurements are inconclusive. It may be possessed with an evil spirit. If it would only break, I could throw it away. Instead it continues to work in this barely-tolerable capacity.
Conclusion: I hate my skil router and look forward to that blessed day I am finally rid of it. ( I may "accidentally" run it over with my truck soon). The collet, however, works as it was designed and doesn't appear to be spirit-free.
