Top Customer Reviews
I did tests on steel as well and had no problems using it for deburring edges. You will want to use a grinder or heavy sander for remove things like slag, but this works nicely if you want to get that last little bit of polish in.
I bought it to use to strip a 12ft x 20ft wood deck of solid paint. My 3" belt sander would not allow to get in tight corners or around the many wooden spindles that make up the railing. This 3/8" sander from Makita did the trick. Very good at removing wood, maybe too good. Several times I pushed a little too hard and put grooves in the wood that had to be smoothed out, but other that that this thing removes paint like a champ. I go through belts quickly as the paint tends to jam the sand paper belt, but not the products' fault it just the nature of the work. Belts are cheap and easy to change so just pop the old one off and wiggle a new one into place and off a running again a minute later.
I think Makita tools are great and I gravitate to them whenever possible, but after purchasing this one I found out that Milwaukee makes one with an optional finger replacement that would allow a 3/4" wide belt. Makita makes optional fingers that would accept either 1/4" or 1/2" belts. If I had it to do over, I would probably opt for the Milwaukee with the 3/4" belt as that would have fit the door strikes better and made the job even faster. However, with that said, the Makita is great and I look forward to using it often on future projects.
