Makita's 1/4-Inch SJS Die Grinder combines 6.6 AMP power with comfort and motor-protection features for longer-lasting grinding performance. The GD0800C is engineered with Makita's innovative Super Joint System (SJS) to protect the gears for longer tool life.
The GD0800C is powered by a 6.6 AMP motor that delivers 7,000 to 28,000 RPM with soft start for smooth start-ups. The electronic speed control maintains constant speed under load, and a variable speed control dial allows the user to match the RPM to the application. Labyrinth construction protects the motor with a complex set of channels, prohibiting dust and contamination. In addition, the protective zig-zag varnish seals the motor and bearings from dust and debris by creating a barrier under rotation. The GD0800C is engineered with SJS, an innovation from Makita that protects the gears by automatically disengaging the motor should the grinding wheel accidentally catch or bind.
Comfort and Ergonomics
The GD0800C weighs just 3.5 pounds and is built with comfort and ergonomic features for extended use. The slender double-neck aluminum gear housing is designed for easy handling, and the slide switch is positioned on the small circumference barrel grip for easy operation. About Makita's Super Joint System (SJS)
Super Joint System (SJS) is an innovation from Makita engineering where the motor armature and spiral bevel gear are linked by a coil spring. If the grinding wheel catches or binds, the coil spring relaxes and disengages the gears from the motor. As the grinding wheel stops, the gears and motor are protected. Makita's growing line of SJS-equipped grinders includes models ranging from a 1/4-inch die grinder to a 7-inch angle grinder.

Top customer reviews
Update: I think I may have a solution to this problem. Remove the collet assembly from the die grinder. Buy some valve grinding compound from your auto parts store and apply to the 1/4" shank of your rotary tool. Insert the tool into the collet and then withdraw. I gently clamped the collet in a vise in order to hold it. Do this several times, perhaps two dozen. The valve grinding compound will evidently smooth out some high spots or burrs and allow the tool to be removed much easier. Note I said "easier", not easily. Now, Makita. Are you listening. You need to lap your collets before you install them in the die grinder. Too many of your customers are having trouble.
Yes, it's a large tool, but the extra weight and leverage helps to keep it from deflecting off your workpiece. It runs very smoothly on ball bearings, has excellent ergonomics and enough power to not bog down or overheat even in hard daily commercial use. I expect it to last for decades. Sure, it takes two wrenches to change a bit, but if you've ever had a router bit slip and ruin a piece of work, you'll appreciate the security and safety this gives. If you have small (or large) hands, you can still choke up on the metal shaft for precise control.
The one downside I see with this tool is that it could use an optional ringed handguard to keep precious flesh away from more aggressive bits and the collet when choking up. A bit of plastic would make this a superior tool Makita.
UPDATE: After a year of regular service, I still consider this to be an exceptional tool. No problems.
Sold by: DBMIMPORTS) also on Amazon. However, the bit is little bigger than the collet. So now I am not sure which one is not up to standard. The bit is little bit bigger. I tried hard to push it into collet and it seems the collect is pretty rigid and there seems no way to be able to push that in. I was wondering if the seller verify if indeed this die grinder is 1/4" collet (hopefully is not a metric one) or if any buyer has the same experience and can share the solution. Many thanks.
UPDATED: I think Makita should have a better instruction in the manual on how to take out the collet. I searched Internet for a while and found a way to get out of the collect completely and then I can put this bit on and tighten up with the collet wrench. Drawback is that the collet is very hard to pull out.
