This tool is designed for extended-use grinding or sanding of large surface areas, i.e. wood floors or weatherboards on a house.

PROS: With a powerful motor, variable speed setting, and the universal 5/8"-11 spindle found on most other grinders, this tool is suitable for professionals and do-it-yourselfers alike. Pistol grip makes this tool easier to use on vertical applications (i.e. weatherboards) and where use of the majority of the sanding surface, not just the edges, is desired (i.e. floors.)

CONS: A little weighty at 4.4 pounds; extended-use on vertical applications can easily tire out the unexpecting.

If your project does not require such large surface areas, or you may want something a little less weighty, I would suggest Makita GV5000 3.6 Amp 5-Inch Disc Sander or the newer version Makita GV5010 Vertical Disc 5-Inch Sander. The photo of the 5010 provide by Amazon is incorrect, however. A quick look at Makita's website will show the newer model accurately.

Happy Grinding!

Overall this tool is excellent. Plenty of power for medium-duty sanding, polishing, and grinding. Variable speed control is fantastic. Well-balanced and not too heavy for on-wall or overhead work.

The clamping arbor is secure but does not allow quick changes of sanding discs or other attachments. It requires two wrenches, one to secure the shaft, the other to loosen the arbor. Because the tool is trigger-operated and the trigger is unguarded one must unplug the tool, then fiddle with two wrenches, both to remove the arbor and to put it back on. Why not put a handy locking button to lock the shaft in place so that only one wrench is required? (The way almost all modern angle grinders work.)

This tool makes a ton of very fine dust and throws it 3 to 6' away from the tool. This is good for keeping sanding discs clear, but it does make a lot of mess around the tool. (I was able to sand over 80 sq. feet of loose & peeling paint with a single 24-grit pad. The pad did not clog at all, the only reason I had to replace it was that I caught an edge of the pad on a sharp object, causing the pad to tear instantly. )

To extend tool motor, switch, and speed-control dial life I strongly recommend you blow out all those parts with dry compressed air at least every 30 minutes or so of operation.

Wow, what a sander, made quick work of the horrible job of fine tuning the refinishing of our 14' x 35' wood deck. Used a floor sander to get the initial layer off but needed to get into the nooks and crannies of this 27 year old deck. Attempted to accomplish this with a palm sander but it was taking forever. That's when I decided it was cost effective to purchase a more powerful sander and chose Makita because if it's reputation. It was like night & day and did a wonderful job cleaning it up like new. See photos. First one is after the floor sander & the next two are after the Makita cleaned it up. The final is after it is stained. The sander was worth every penny, should have bought it at the start & I would have saved myself a week of back braking work.

My sander arrived on time with all the parts a specified.

My problem came when I tried to assemble the unit as per instruction book. The lock nut was so tight on the spindle it was impossible to remove without destroying the rather flimsy tools provided for the is purpose.

I am not a weak person and slightly bent the spindle wrench when trying to release the lock nut.

The lock nut was finally released by anchoring the lock nut with 12 inch channel locks and beating with a hammer on a stout wrench around the spindle.

Apart from this, the tool works as advertised, but if I had persisted as per the instruction book the tool would be idle awaiting replacement wrenches which would probably have met with the same fate as the first set.

Very pleased with the quality of this tool. I can tell by how it sounds and feels that it will last a long time. The variable speed is nice so you can sand and grind with one unit.
