About Makita's 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Tool Series
In addition to their breakthrough 18-volt LXT series, Makita has added 18-volt compact lithium-ion tools for cordless power in a more compact size. Makita's 18-volt lithium-ion batteries and ENERGY STAR rated Optimum Charging System provide several benefits over old battery technology. When compared to traditional 18-volt NiCd batteries, Makita's 18-volt lithium-ion batteries have 40% less weight, longer run time, and five times lower self-discharge to keep cells active and ready to use at any time.
Makita's 18-volt lithium-ion battery delivers 2,000 cycles--2.5 times more than NiCd. In addition, built-in shock absorbing features help protect the battery, and 16 firm-holding contact terminals deliver constant high power. During the charging process, a built-in memory chip in the battery communicates with the Optimum Charger for a more efficient charge, extending the battery life. Makita's Optimum Charger charges both 18-volt compact lithium-ion batteries and 18-volt LXT lithium-ion batteries. It will charge an 18-volt compact lithium-ion battery in just 15 minutes, and an 18-volt LXT lithium-ion battery in only 30 minutes. Makita also offers a Rapid Automotive Charger for 18-volt LXT and 18-volt compact lithium-ion batteries that plugs into 12-volt DC sockets equipped in most automobiles and trucks for added mobility.
Makita is a worldwide manufacturer of industrial-quality power tools and offers a wide range of industrial accessories. Makita applies leading-edge innovation to engineer power tools that are more compact and energy efficient, yet deliver industrial strength power and results. Makita U.S.A., Inc. is located in La Mirada, California, and operates an extensive distribution network located throughout the U.S. Makita is Best in Class Engineering.
Every Makita lithium-ion tool is backed by Makita's 3-year warranty that covers repair due to defects in materials or workmanship up to three years from the date of original purchase. Makita lithium-ion batteries and chargers have a limited 1-year warranty.

Overall I've more than recouped my investment, many times over. They have a really natural grip, and they just perform great. Ive been so pleased with these that I purchased several more 18v tools and a couple more 5 amp batteries to compliment this set.
Makita doesn't do EVERY tool the best, but they seem to have a really broad platform, and most of the main tools they offer are solid. The charge time in particular seemed to be the fastest among the competition, and the battery reviews generally seemed most favorable. The newer 5 amp batteries give a much longer run time than the stock batteries.
Overall I would totally recommend these to a friend. Either these, or the yellow competitor would be a fine choice for a new drill/driver set.
The batteries charge in 20mins or less and you can't run out a battery in that amount of time (unless you are mixing concrete with it). This set is the little brother to the blue drills. I have these and wouldn't want anything more.
The driver is awesome. The chuck will resist the turning when you are putting in a drill, so it's easier to tighten down (no more two handed serious torquing, you can have one hand on the handle with the other turning the chuck). It has 2 speed settings for those that like to slam the screws in and those that need the additional torque of the slower moving bits.
The impact driver is loud, but awesome for driving those longer screws. It's smaller and lighter than the main driver, but will sink screws faster and longer than the driver - just wear some ear plugs while you're doing it.
The charger has a built-in fan that cools the unit and the battery while charging. When they say it's a quick charge, it's QUICK! I charge my batteries each time I use the drill just to keep the juices moving in them. The other nice thing is that it will play you a song when they are finished charging, so you know exactly when it's ready to go.
If you are in the construction business, you will probably want the bigger set that has larger batteries (and now has brushless motors available, too). For the rest of us that dabble in construction, but need some seriously good quality tools to work with, this set of drills is for you. If you are going to use these drills 5-6 times per year, save your money and get the Ryobi from Home Depot.
One last thing. The Dewalt, at the time I bought these, had issues with their batteries failing after a couple months of use. It was hit and miss, but I didn't want to take the chance. I spoke with several cabinet makers and also saw many Makita's on jobsites before I bought mine.
For me a dead battery isn't that traumatic experience because I have killed plenty of them in battery tools. But after trying to purchase batteries for these tools I'm disappointed because the new batteries are having the same issues with storage as the old ones.
On the whole...if you are constantly using these tools and cycling the batts these are phenomenal tools with plenty of torque to replace old battery tools (mine replaced a 20V Craftsman set) as they handle much better due to the lighter battery. BUT the battery storage issues keep me from recommending this to anybody in the future.
Hope that helps!
Before you know it, you'll start wondering what else you can do with these batteries. Hmmm, that cut-off saw could be handy. Oh, I could use a cordless reciprocating saw. Damn that circular saw would be great. I may as well get a couple 3v batteries. Sure wish I had a cordless sabre saw. A blower would be nice for cleanup. I bet the vacuum cleaner would be useful around the house. That radio could be valuable if the power goes out. Perhaps I should get the florescent light for working in the garage. I could use a little more light power to see in the attic.
And so it goes. The rationalization never ends. You think you're getting off easy for $200 and, after a year or two, you've ended up blowing a grand on a bunch of really great tools. And trying to hide if from your significant other. Sure, you think, "I can stop anytime." Bwahahaha!!! Alas, there is no 12-step program for LXT-iction.
