Update April 30, 2012
Amazon put sales of the saw on hold for 2 weeks and it is now available again. I ordered and just received the (3rd) unit. Much better in regards to the slide binding. There is some minor binding (again the top bearing more so than the bottom) but it will not effect performance. The slides are not as smooth as other 10" and 12" saws I looked at (big box stores) but they don't offer the portability I want. I hope to get many years of good service from this one.
I initially was tempted to buy the cheapest miter saw I could find, but after doing a little research I concluded that a sliding miter saw offered many advantages. For those of you not familiar with the differences, a sliding miter saw allows you to cut wider stock. It doesn't turn it into a table saw, but it does permit working with stock wider than the blade. This particular Makita has a 7.5 inch blade which is just perfect for small jobs. It easily cuts 2x4's without utilizing the sliding feature and, as explained above, cuts much wider stock when both slide rails are unlocked.
The cuts are amazingly smooth and it effortlessly cuts any species or thickness of wood I've tried. The scale markings for making angled cuts are spot on; my first mitered corner pieces for the planter I built were perfect the first time -- and I really don't have a clue what I'm doing.
The overall quality of the machine is first rate. All the movements are silky smooth and it was perfect out of the box. Even the dust collector works, capturing the majority of the sawdust.
I spent more for this then initially planned, but I'm very glad I did. The Makita quality and the functionality of the sliding arm were well worth the extra dollars. This is a saw I'll be able to use the rest of my life.
The bearings were a bit stiff at first but have loosened up nicely, don't let this bother you one bit. Also there's no run-out because of the size of the blade and it's an extremely accurate saw. I struggled over getting this for a long time since it's not cheap, but honestly it's one of the best purchases I've made in a long time. It's not loaded up with features and gizmos which really were never that big of a deal to me. I think I bought into the "kitchen sink" marketing garbage with the fancier saws but it's nice to get a saw that simply does what it's supposed to do.
One more note: I've literally bought hundreds of items on Amazon.com, but this is the only review I've ever felt compelled to do!
