If you live in a hurricane-prone area as I do, having two fully-charged batteries gives you lots of backup light during power outages. Not to mention it saves you having to throw out those old "D" cell batteries you never used.
I was not sure if I wanted this unit or the "spotlight" version. So far I am happy, as this one puts out a lot of light and is fairly directional.
Surprisingly, this unit is far lighter than one of those old massive 3 or 4-battery long flashlights. And the bulb does not break when you drop it. Which is to say, once you discover LED lighting you will never go back.
Update - 1 year later:
I use this light virtually every day in my (windowless garage) shop, primarily to illuminate my workpiece for precise marking and cutting. In retrospect, one of the most obvious features of the flashlight is one if its most useful, namely, the ability to sit firmly on its base and provide hands-free lighting. Needless to say, it would make a great camping light, if you could deal with the weight of the battery in your pack.
The head rotates 360 degrees and folds 180, so the light can be pointed in nearly any direction and the lens can be faced inward to protect it when folded down. There’s a rotating hook for hanging which folds into the head, and the light is pretty stable sitting on the battery. I initially thought the included additional hook that attaches to the light on a cord was silly, but I ended up using it the first day. It is somewhat in the way once installed though, and I wish it was easier to detach.
The handle is comfortable with a non-slippery grip, but the switch is a little awkward. It’s hard to use with one hand, and trigger switch would be better.
I can’t tell how much abuse this will take. The lens seems vulnerable and the switch requires three strong presses to go from high-low-off. Otherwise the case and the movable joints seem quite sturdy and nicely made. I’m pretty happy with it so far.
The light falls off fairly quickly once you get out about 6 feet. It'll light up a completely dark room, but not to the point where it will take the place of work floods, etc. It would be perfect for working under a sink, under a car hood, or maybe as a backup desk lamp if the bulb in your swing-arm lamp goes out, etc.
In the picture, only one swivel point is obvious. There are actually two, making it easy to point the light in any direction including straight up.
