Edit: couple of months later and still liking this radio. Someone asked a question and I figured its worth mentioning that this radio works great with and iPhone5 and this adapter http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Lightning-to-30-Pin-Adapter/dp/B0097BEFZE/ref=br_lf_m_1000889701_1_2_ttl?ie=UTF8&s=mp3&pf_rd_p=1541985782&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_i=1000889701&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=08WGPM4THXHH924TCE42 . Sits right on top and if you flip the handle up, it supports the weight of the phone from bobbling around on top. Play, FF, and rewind all work to control iTunes AND pandora on my phone. This is better than my truck which overrides pandora with iTunes every time I try to FF to the next track using my head unit. Hope this helps!
The radio he great reception and the sound is great. It's not super loud but I don't try to fill the whole house with my music. I prefer to place the radio in the area I'm working and keep the volume lower. If you want to fill the whole jobsite consider the big Milwaulkie or Bosch radios.
The sound quality is good and the bass is nice and full but not overpowering. 1 large 18v battery lasts a couple of days.
Build quality it top notch. The unit is well built and feels very solid. All exposed corners have really thick rubber bumpers. It is pretty compact and will fit anywhere.
The iPod control interface is not super sophisticated but does the job. I typically create a big playlist and just set it to shuffle. The iPod charges from the battery so it never goes dead.
The only thing I miss coming from the Bosch is the power outlets it had. I wish Makita would add this, however I use so many cordless tools now that it's not a huge deal. Also, be aware that unlike some other brands, this radio does NOT charge your battery when plugged in. I have several batteries so it's ok, but I feel like Makita is missing out on a great feature.
Overall I'm very happy with my purchase. This radio is on par with all the Makita 18v tools. Well thought out and solidly build. I recommend it!! I only gave it 4 stars because of the lack of battery charging and extra outlets.
A few months in and I'm still happy with this radio. I do wish it would charge batteries but it has good sound and works great with the older iPod/iPhones. It does not have direct connection to the newest iPhone connectors but that's ok for me. I do miss the remote that my old bosch radio had. It was nice to be able to mute the radio when the boss showed up with the client. Sometimes we have music on that might not be appropriate for everyone. :-)
One negative I found was that the model that I purchased said that it was compatible with the iPhone and iPads. Well, the problem is that it does not fit the latest iPhone 5 models. Makita needs to have a connection adapter made so that it fits all iPhone models. Also, the latest is now to have the system be wireless bluetooth connection which would alieviate the need for an adapter connector.
Considering all things, this Makita radio still beats the Bose systems almost to where there is no comparison.
It sounds great, and is built very well.
The interface and design is very user friendly.
Makita batteries power the radio for quite some time.
Really very pleased.

although it would have been nice if it did work like a charger
