About Makita's 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Tool Series
As one of the pioneers driving the cordless tool revolution, Makita changed the game with its breakthrough 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Series. Three years after its debut, Makita's LXT Series has grown from seven to over 35 tools, providing a wide range of cordless solutions for professional tradesmen. Makita also added 18V Compact Lithium-Ion for cordless power in a more compact size. Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries and ENERGY STAR rated Optimum Charging System provide several benefits over old battery technology. When compared to traditional 18V Ni-Cd batteries, Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have 40% less weight, longer run time, and five-times lower self-discharge to keep cells active and ready to use at any time.
Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion battery delivers 2,000 cycles -- 2.5X more than Ni-Cd. In addition, built-in shock absorbing features help protect the battery, and sixteen firm-holding contact terminals deliver constant high power. During the charging process, a built-in memory chip in the battery communicates with the Optimum Charger for a more efficient charge, extending the battery life. Makita's Optimum Charger is also faster: it will charge an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery in just 30 minutes, and an 18V Compact Lithium-Ion battery in only 15 minutes. Makita also offers a Rapid Automotive Charger for 18V LXT and 18V Compact Lithium-Ion batteries that plugs into 12V DC sockets equipped in most automobiles and trucks for added mobility. Makita's growing line of LXT cordless tool solutions features a wide range of industrial-quality power tools, including driver-drills, impact drivers, impact wrenches, saws, grinders, screwguns, rotary hammers, and more. The LXT Series also offers a jobsite radio, rechargeable flashlights, and several different combo kits.

Pros-
-Great battery life. I used the skill saw and drill and screw gun to cut and install 8 different shelves in my garage and did it all with one battery.
-Grinder is great. The whole reason I got the kit was because I needed a battery operated grinder, and the price of it as a singular item is almost half of the price of the kit. So I got the kit. It will last for 15 min straight with decent power on one battery.
-Circular saw is impressive for being full sized. All of the adjustments are super easy to use and as long as you don't try to rip too fast, it works flawlessly.
-Battery charger has a fan in it to cool battery while charging and before if it is too hot to charge.
Cons-
-The batteries. A couple things. 1. They have a computer chip inside which is ok, but I driped some water on my grinder and the grinder survived, but the battery is dead now. So I have a twice charged paper weight. Older battery systems could get wet, dry out and be fine. Not now, so if you work with or around water, think twice.
-Even though they charge quickly, it would still be nice to have a dual charger to charge two at once. If I'm out in the field, I don't want to have to come home and worry about switching them to charge them both. I don't care about price, but there should be that option. Also, a replacement charger is over 100 bucks. Which is a little pricy for a charger.
-Power. Although I have not desired more power. I have been happy with the tools, my father has a DeWalt set and there is surprisingly more torque when you punch the trigger of the drill and screw gun. That might not be a concern, as it is not with me. But if you really need the hammer features, you will get more "hit" with another brand. Other brands offer dual chargers.
THE RADIO..... the radio is the biggest waist of 100 dollars that I have ever seen. In theory it is good, but the speakers are so small, and its top volume distorts and isn't very loud to begin with. I really wish I had saved the 100 bucks and gone with the 5 tool set instead of the one with the radio. There are cool features, like an internal aux jack in the battery compartment so your mp3 player can be shielded and clean. It has a great antenna, but it is supposed to be a job site radio, and it is definitely not that.
Conclusion.
I am not unhappy that I got this. I `m buying two more batteries and another charger. Even on Amazon, it is cheaper to buy the two drill set (which comes with those) than to buy just the batteries and charger. So I guess I'll have a spare drill and screw gun.
The other tools are not so great on battery life and not as powerful. If you are a professional carpenter who spends a lot of time with a circular saw, I'm sure you wouldn't buy this set with the intention of the battery saw replacing your mainstay. On the other hand, I love not having to go look for an extension cord when I need to make a quick cut. The grinder is also terrible on battery life and nowhere near as powerful as a decent corded grinder. Again, I love having it for quick cuts, and every once in a while, for some quick sanding. It cannot run more than 15 minutes constantly on a fully charged battery. The reciprocating saw seems to be best on battery life, but that may be just because it is really not the kind of tool that I use for more than a few minutes at a time.
Now, in terms of a comparison with other tool companies, I would have to say that the Dewalt stuff really feels stronger. It is all much heavier. The makita impact has a few little plastic things on it, like a glow in the dark ring around the business end of it, that are poorly put on and kind of trashy. My impression is that dewalt doesn't pull stuff like that. On the other hand, I am happy with how much smaller and lighter the makita stuff, especially for the huge amount of power that the drill and impact driver have.
As well, makita offers the widest variety of bare tools that run with the same batteries. Granted, I haven't bothered to purchase any of them yet, but I like to keep my options open!
The saw is meant for smaller projects, so don't think you're going to be using it for framing a bunch of walls or cutting 4x4s.
The grinder works great as does the reciprocating saw. Both eat batteries for breakfast, but you get a few with this kit.
The charger can keep up easily with 2 people working. Though I'd still get an extra battery if you can.
The light is a very basic light. The battery adds a great steady base for a stationary source.
The driver and drill are basically what I bought this set for. I knew what they were good for, and they do it without issue!
The rolling bag, extra charger, and worksite radio were all nice to have. Though one of the rollers on the bag has already broken. I don't think it was meant to roll through a rocky worksite, but I thought it should have been. The organization within the bag leaves a little to be desired. But it stores the tools, so I'm not really too upset with that.
The radio sounds good and is rugged. There's so little room in the protected area for a music device (phone, MP3 player, etc.) that it's a little upsetting. But I've made it work.
If I could give half stars, I'd go 3.5. But I can't, so I'm going with 4. Great tools! The extras are the only thing that bothered me a little. There's no reason to knock the tools.
Buy this for the tools. Don't rely on the bag to roll on rough terrain or expect too much from the saw or flashlight, and you'll be happy!
