The Makita 12V max Lithium-Ion Cordless Recipro Saw (model RJ01ZW) is a powerful and compact solution for a range of cutting applications including PVC and ABS pipe, EMT, drywall, wood, and more. With the Makita-exclusive dual-position trigger, the end user can decide between a paddle switch or traditional trigger switch grip depending on the application for maximum control during the cut, and increased versatility. The RJ01ZW has a variable speed motor with 0-3,300 strokes-per-minute with a 1/2" length stroke to provide faster cutting. The "tool-less" blade change system allows for faster blade installation and removal for increased productivity. The compact size (14" long, only 2.6 lbs.) is engineered for convenient one-handed operation. The RJ01W is powered by the Makita 12V max Lithium-Ion battery. This models is sold as a BARE TOOL, no chrger or battery

With my trade we use this type of saw often. And I've grown to really like the 12v cordless tool sizes.. I own 3 different 12v reciprocating saws including this saw and a Milwaukee as well as a Bosch. And this Makita has lasted both the others, the Milwaukee which was the second one due to the other one going up in smoke the second time I used it, died just after less then a month of light use.. Bosch is still working but vibrates excessively! The Makita has seen more use but has acutely runs like new longer! I've only had to tight the shoe once but nothing else plug and play other then that. To tight the shoe, I drilled two little holes in the side to reach the Hex screws from the side

Well so far so good! It tears through plastic and thin metal. I just used it yesterday with a full size blade making three cuts through 2" stainless exhaust tubing and it did the job. The battery was about spent by that time though.. but no biggie they recharge quickly!

It does not have as big of a stroke as full sized reciprocating saws and because of this it takes quite a bit longer to make cuts through larger materials.. but it did eventually work and produced a surprisingly clean cut! I normally would have dug out the full sized recip for this job but I wanted to see if my little guy here could handle the task.. and he did!

If you need this for light duty cutting (plastic, small diameter pipes, thin metal) this should work great for you but if your main need for a reciprocating saw is to cut exhaust pipes then honestly I wouldn't plan on this being your go-to tool.

I was going to give it four stars because of its limitations but now that I think about it... I didn't buy it for heavy duty jobs and I was pleasantly surprise that it "made the cut" so to speak (har, har ok I'm leaving now) so.. FIVE STARS IT IS! I love my white and black Makita tools!

I just got this Makita tool and haven't used it much, but I can compare this to the Milwaukee 12V Hacksall, which I have been using for several years. I use the Makita tools in my home shop and have the Milwaukees at my workshop.

I bought the bare tool version of this tool, which comes in a cardboard box with a wood and a metal cutting blade - no battery, no charger, no case. I swapped out a battery from my Makita 12V max drill, popped a blade in and went to work. First off, I determined that I really like the ergonomics of this tool, with the exception of the safety lockouts - which I will detail below. It really is like a mini reciprocating saw. It has two triggers, a forward one, that is a barrel grip type and a rear one that is a pistol grip trigger. I began cutting into some wood scraps, 1x4's and 2x4's. I found that I mostly used the barrel grip trigger, I could get some real leverage from it, and control the tool well with it. The ergonomics of this Makita tool really are far superior to the Milwaukee Hacksall - which I've always been somewhat disappointed with. The Hacksall is a strictly one-handed tool, but the shape of the tool makes it difficult to get leverage with that one hand, which compromises its usefulness. Makita solved that problem with this tool.

So how did the cutting go? Well I first determined that my battery wasn't fully charged. The saw kept stopping mid cut, whenever it encountered significant resistance. It was pretty anemic. I threw the battery on the charger for 30 minutes or so, and it woke the tool up, and it began to cut fine.Read more ›

Makita is by far one of my top favorite brands. I'm a small girl (thin, 100 lbs); this unit is easy to handle, and very useful around the home and if you have property. I like the two means of safety on the unit (the slide button going through the handle, and the double handle method). Batteries charge fairly quickly and last hours. The unit is lightweight and versatile. Would recommend this brand and this product to anyone needing a cordless reciprocating saw. Enjoy! ;)

works good for a small 12v saw. i got the matching makita impact and drill set on sale and liked them. they are light and i can throw em in a small bag to take with me on jobs. (i'm an electrician) obviously, a 18v dewalt is much faster and better, but it's much larger and heavier.
this will cut through electrical emt, just takes a couple extra seconds compared to a larger more powerful drill.

if you're looking for a saw for light jobs, this is it.
