I received it yesterday and after unpacking it I was very excited to give it a try, I attached the offset base and a few test passes on a peice of plywood, then did the job I bought it for. Flawless and easy.
After that I was eager to play with the other bases and a variety of by bits. About 5 hours strait of routing later, I had a feel for the tool and I was impressed. I pushed the tool pretty much to its limit and while this has far less power then my full sized routers, its very impressive for a laminate trimmer, I can easily see using this with the plunge base on a lot of projects i would normally dig my full sized router out for.
On the standard trimmer base, I really like the worm gear depth adjustment, super easy and I had no problem getting accurate depths.
The angle base is pretty strait forward. I do wish the angle gauge was large and easier to read with more detailed increments, this is only a minor complaint.
The offset base, which I originally bought this for, works exactly as it should. I do wish you could adjust depth on it, but i am not sure anyone makes an offset base where this is possible, so I wont hold it against Makita. You do need an allen wrench to attach the bit on this base, which was not included, minor issue, I of course have full sets of allens, but I like to have a dedicated one thats kept in the case with a tool that needs it and I think it should have included one. I used the offset base to cut through 3/8" inch solid maple (which is a very hard wood) with a 1/2" bit in a single pass, due to the nature of the job, which is a lot to ask. I worried about the belt slipping or something, but it worked flawlessly and made a perfect cut.
The plunge base is very slick, I cant wait for an excuse to use it on a real project. Everything is intuitive and simple to adjust. I used the edge guide and plunge base to do some flutes and couldnt be more pleased with how smooth the operation was.
I love the case. Its compartmented for each base to fit in nicely, the lid has a bunch of pockets that easily fit the included attachments with plenty of space for future additions. It has has a bit case that detaches via velcro that is big enough to carry a nice variety of bits, I thought that was a very nice touch. There is also a ton of extra room in the case, enough that i was able to put my full sized Porter Cable router and guides in there as well with still room to spare! I typically throw away the cases companies include with their tools, this one is a keeper though.
The kit as a whole is super modular. For instance the bottom of the offset base can be removed and attached to the trimmer base in order to make space to add an additional handle (which is included). 2 different dust collectors are included, one for the plunge base and another that attaches to the other bases. I didnt try the dust collectors, I am used to just accepting routing as a messy job where even the best dust collectors tend to be marginal. Its really nice that the kit includes various guides, the edge guide works as one would expect it to and can attach to the trimmer or the plunge base. There is a trimmer guide which I didnt try and a circle guide as well. It comes with a couple template guides too, but I bought an adaptor to use my set or Porter Cable guides which gives far more flexibility. When you add up just all the included guides alone that your normally have to pay extra for, then consider all the bases, this router is a fantastic deal. Deals like this always make me worry that I might be getting a sub par tool, but this absolutely is not the case here.
