One of the jobs I attempted with this drill was to install a large gun cabinet in my house; this required drilling four 1/2" holes 5" deep into the concrete foundation. After twenty minutes and three battery changes I had only completed 1 of the 4 holes (just FYI, I had a new Bosch masonry bit... so I can't blame the drill bit). One of the claims of this hammer/driver is "[it is] engineered for applications in wood, metal, masonry, and concrete" - my experience is that this is last part is NOT true. Most of us buying this drill are not going to use it to drill into concrete (because, let's be honest, it's not designed for that), so come on Makita, don't BS us.
Overall, this is a great drill for $99.
I was a little reluctant purchasing this model. It is actually China made, it feels a little shaky and the drive sounds like the gearing doesn't mesh.
Being a high voltage, it does have some power and torque. The hammer feature comes in handy, in not having to switch tools when using carbide bits in masonry.
I don't care for the flashy 'Transformer' appearance. The tool gets dirty, I like to keep them clean, and all those little rubber protrusions make it hard to clean. The battery charger seems like a showy, over kill for its purpose. The carrying case is more of waste of the overall cost, than its worth. Even when it's unlatched, it annoying just to lift the lid, especially when you're holding the drill.
Well, I had to buy this one to check it out, as I have many others. If I find something worth, I'll purchase a number of them. But not this one.
Battery lasts a decent amount of time, I am sure there are bigger batteries for it but would be heavier so this works just fine. drilled out about 2 holes in the 9 pieces I needed and still had life.
only complaint would be it is a bit heavy but with how hard it works I can only assume that to be normal.
