I was so excited to get one of these after reading all the great reviews. Unfortunately, my experience was not like the others. The shear will not make a clean cut. I bought some 25 gauge steel studs to test it. I was ultimately wanting to cut 20 gauge studs, but they were more expensive to buy as a simple test. When I cut a stud, the shear will sometimes (about 1 out of 8 cuts) crush the side wall of the stud. Also, the shear always leaves a relatively large (see attached image) tab of metal sticking out that requires me to trim it with hand shears. It appears as though the shearing portion of the tool is not properly meshing or is out of tolerance.

I tried to contact the manufacturer by email to see if there was something I could adjust, but after 5 days I did not yet receive any answer. Considering this shear is about twice as expensive as a relatively good abrasive chop saw, I am electing to return the shear and purchase a chop saw instead. An added bonus is that the chop saw will cut other things, whereas the shear is a single purpose tool.

As a side note, this shear is indeed well constructed and durable. If it worked, I would have definitely kept it, but I can't justify almost $400 for a tool that doesn't perform.

Nothing I can find indicate size limits for the leg ht of stud. For 1 1/4 in. leg ht it will deform the curled part of the leg. If you can adjust the ht or put a spacer under the bottom of the stud when cutting it would not, and if the leg ht were another 1/8 to 1/4 in. it would not deform. I could find no info on adjustm nor does it appear to be adjustable. After using the tool a good bit, it is wayyyyy better than using a chop saw so I upped my rating 1 more star to 4. It was also quick and easy to cut the angle material we used around edges. The deformations as mentioned above, do not effect the performance of the product, at least for what we installed on the current project. I could see how the deformations may cause some consternation in some applications.

I had one of these 25 years ago, and just bought another one. It's well made.
It's good in a pinch where you can't make loud noise with a chop saw. It works best with 25 GA which I never use. It's OK with 20GA EQ (27 mil max), BUT 30 mil & thicker not so good, especially studs with a 1-5/8" flange.
Works well on track up to 30 mil, 33 mil maybe, but 1-1/2" track leg max.
Also studs with a wider flange lip (over 1/4") like struct 20 for example, doesn't fit well.
Bottom line: if you're using cheap 25 ga studs, and your doing a very small job where noise is a problem, this tool is for you.

In the time it takes you to measure and mark the stud the conventional way, you will have the stud cut. The cuts are cleaner than the factory ends. I built a long in-feed table with 1 inch increments.

I just started framing with steel. I work on residential projects and am starting to use 20 guage steel for finished basements. I originally used snips, then a jig saw with bimetal blade. I never got into the abrasive chop saw due to sparks and noise. In many cases, it is way to dramatic of a way to cut steel when you are working in someones basement. I then came across this shear. I don't think it could be any better. Cuts effortlessly, cleanly and totally silent. You do have to have the stud lined up perfectly to fit through the shear guide, but it just takes one or two cuts to get the hang of it. I recomend this product with no hestitation, hard to think there is a better, faster, cleaner and more efficient way to gut 20 or 25 guage steel.
