This book shouldn't come with a warning, rather, it should come with an endorsement.
In Male/Male Seth Nicholas King has written a book that will take your breath, break your heart and illuminate you. It is rare that any artist can do that much in one work and it is a joy to experience. This isn't just a gay anthem. It is a love story. A story of a gay man who fell in love with being gay and accepts the normalcy of it. And the story of a maybe-straight man realizing that what it means to be in love without reservation.
Although anyone who has suffered the wounds of not being normal enough will cherish this book, it first and rightly belongs to gay men. Men who have struggled and fought for thousands of years to be accepted as men. Talon's painful discoveries become our own as he realizes and documents just how much hatred, disgust and discrimination gay men face every day. How much pain Alexander bears by refusing to be shamed and punished for being normal. This painful, somehow earned penalty is society's judgment that gay men have brought this punishment on themselves. It is a penalty Alexander refuses.
Surprisingly, this is one of the most romantic stories I've ever read. Alexander is earthy and yet magical in his dreams and experience of Talon. Talon is the innocent adventurer who finally dares and then explodes with joy. Together, they seem to soar and fire our imagination and emotions. The dark and the light journey makes for a beautiful, sparkly harmony between the two main characters who ultimately love being in love.
In some place, it might seem to be too much ruminating; maybe too much cerebral chatter. This is perfect characterization as both Talon and Alexander are writers and that’s what writers do. By choosing to have his MCs be writers, the author gave himself the biggest vehicle to share all the magic and hopes and dreams in his heart.
If I could give Male/Male more than five stars, I would because this book is worth more to all of us than a rating system can convey. You have my heartfelt thanks, Mr. King.
There are definitely moments where I have to wonder about how quickly Talon falls head over heels for Alexander. Although, I’m pretty much in love with him, too…so there’s that.
As a woman who reads gay romance, listening to Alexander preach about the commercialization of the “taboo genre” made me question the pleasure I get from reading the modern gay romance pulp fiction. But as a member of the LGBTQ community, I can feel his pain and anger and amusement and pleasure from the naturalization of being gay in modern literature. And I know that I’m not actually hearing Alexander. I’m hearing Seth King, and feeling his pain and anger and amusement and pleasure. Well written (although a couple of typos – hush up, you grammar queens out there), with a lot of heart.
I HIGHLY recommend this book. So stop hedging and read it already!
Told alternately by Talon and Alexander.
This story felt very personal
Talon..Damn...how he puts down quite accurate about only loving at full blast somehow being too much and not being enough...that hit straight to my heart.
Some questions felt just for me and brought me back to very unique feelings "Have you ever felt a singular focus on yourself?" Yes! and it felt amazing! Like I was the only one in the world...in a cocoon surrounded by attention...feeling unique....
Some sentences were so well put down.
"I have no more time to hide a single feeling, ever again.”
I don't want to cry but I already feel something rolling down and splash on my screen...
“So yeah – do it correctly” ....damn that's so right
When Alexander opens his mouth he is touching my heart....real, honest, open.... I just love a person who is himself and more...
When he tells about how they met and how he sees it all and how he felt when he finally after all these years get the phone call.....another splash...
Alexander introduced Talon in his gay world. Through his experiences and his thoughts and opinion we get to know Alexander, how he lived and lives. How he experienced his life as a gay person in a mainly straight and aggressive world. Talon only knows the straight way of life and never crossed it.....but now...in a naive way...he learns and.....it's almost if he gets 'home' (I put that word before I read it further up in this book lol)
There's al lot of 'education' from Alexander's side. He is intelligent and well mouthed and very kind...
"But once you love someone like that, I don’t think you can truly ever un-love them again."
Beautiful written story about a book that will eventually not be written at all. Two men who are meant to be together. It was actually an education about what it is to be gay in a short-sighted world. It hurts deeply I'm crying my eyes out now while reviewing because I could feel the pain.
The unfolding of Talon was meant to be and realistic even if I didn't understand him at some moments...later on I did.
Standing in a cruel world, God.... most people just don't understand what they do to each other, they are blinded....they hurt for what....? Love...?
Please open your heart and shudder of your winkers. The only thing that counts in life is Love and LoveisLove !!!
