Shaye Archer, our protagonist, has endured unspeakable horror in her short life. She was found as a teenager, almost every bone broken in her body, evidence of rape and torture apparent. The thing is, she can't remember who her captors were or anything about her life previous to being rescued and adopted by a social worker--Corinne Archer.
Shaye may not be able to find closure for her past, but she wants to make sure no one else has to go through what she did, not if she can help it. So she becomes a private investigator.
Herein enters Emma. Emme needs help. The police thinks she is suffering from PTSD and don't give her concerns a second glance, but she swears she is being stalked by her husband. A husband she had killed in self defense a year prior ... Emma goes to Shaye for help because she has no one else.
LOVED the premise of this story. I loved the first chapters, I was hooked. I wanted more. Why was Emma seeing her dead husband? Who was stalking her?
As the story unfolds, the plot just became way too unbelievable...when the reader finally figures out the answers to the questions above, the villian's reveal is so out of left field, it was almost funny. I finished the book and loved the first part...but was let down by the end.
I ended up downloading a sample of book 2 only to see if I can get over how I suspect all of these books end. Can't quite commit myself to buying more, but we'll see. To be fair, I'd give it a 3.5 if I could, docking 1.5 stars for sheer absurdity.
There was one huge anomaly which was not addressed by Shaye or Jackson, and which was mentioned several times but never dealt with as one would expect.
However, I will read another Shaye Archer book and give this author another chance.
